So what is the definitive word on using alcohol impregnated wipes on Nano Coated $2,300 Nikon Lenses?

Most I can find is that nano coating is fragile and is only applied to internal lens elements. Should be okay to clean same as other lenses. Just be sure it's a clean T-shirt. ;)

Actually David I thought the same thing and then went on line and found:

Zeiss Clean Screen Wipes:
•Individually wrapped, premoistened, electronics-safe cleaning cloths in a durable resalable pouch
•Ammonia-, alcohol- and lint-free
•Smudge-free and static resistant
•Includes 20

So I think I'll return the Baush + Lomb and go to the store that has the Zeiss.

Those are different from the lens wipes they are the ones they sell for LCD's and computer screens I would stay away from them for lens they leave a anti static residue behind

Nikon support page says a few drops of cleaner on a lint free cloth wiped in a circular motion. You can get a bottle of there cleaner for $3.95 can not find the ingredients of the Nikon lens cleaner fluid on line but there is a very good chance it is alcohol based as are 99% of all lens cleaning fluids. The coatings on eye glasses is not as tough as camera lens my ARC coating on my glasses is very easy to scratch and is recommended that they are washed in dish detergent and dried with a lens cloth do not think I will be washing any of my camera lens in the sink though. I do not require anything other than my blower and a dry micro fiber cloth 99% of the time but when I do need to get a finger print or smudge off I do not hesitate grabbing one of my Zeiss wipes I have some lens that are over 30 years old without a single scratch and the old coatings were not as tough as the newer coatings.

I think we'll probably know the absolute best answer. All I can find from Nikon is to use "Lens Cleaning Solution", but not solvents. I guess it depends on your definition of solvent.

In a NY Times interview with "Steve Heiner, the senior technical manager at Nikon", he says, "For persistent spots on the lens, you might need a cleaning solution. Don’t buy a bottled product that is mostly water and detergent. “You make a bigger mess,” said Mr. Heiner. The slowly drying water and sticky detergent can actually attract more dirt. Use generic, fast drying denatured alcohol applied sparingly to the cloth, never to the lens. “If you put it on the lens, it can get inside.”

But he also says, "Don’t have any alcohol? A perfectly good substitute for light cleaning is “a good huff of breath across the lens.”

Doh!!!

I found them in the Computer section near the mice in my local Walmart next to another brand with more for less.

Micro fiber cloth, followed by lens pen for anything left behind!
The Zeiss Wipes I got at Walmart say AMMONIA free, but don't say anything about alcohol. The box clearly indicates they are for use on camera lenses, monitors, eyeglasses, cell phones and other fine electronics.

Got home & checked the lens Zeiss wipes and they do contain alcohol! I'm going to ask Nikon support but they usually do not respond too quickly.

That is great. As far as I can find they are silent to the ingredients in their cleaner. I believe a smal amount of alcohol cannot be harmful to the lens or Zeiss would not have it in the Lens Cleaning wipes. The packet even say that their product is safe for anti-refelective multi-layer coatings. I have used these wipes for years but not with much frequency because it is unusual that a blower and soft cloth doesn't do the job.
Really looking forward to what Nikon has to say about this. Thanks for taking the initiative on this.

I have seen reference on here a number of times for Zeiss lens claening tissues from WALMART. I went to WALMART this AM and they could only find Bausch + Lomb Premoistened lens cleaning tissue 50 count for $ 2.97. Contains Isopropyl Alcohol.

Are these the same? Any issues with tissues moistened with Alcohol?

The Zeiss wipes are located in the eye glass section, not in photo supplies. No alcohol.

According to the package, "Contains isopropyl alcohoh."

If you want the best cleaning cloths which leica use specifically, get those; they are ,very fine and soft, and perfectly dry. Leica will not use ANY other cleaning cloth.

From the Zeiss box of Lens Cleaning Wipes purchased at Sam's: "Safe for lenses with anti-reflective coatings; ammonia-free formula." I've used these with every DSLR I've ever owned from day one with no problems.

Skip, I have packets purchased at Walmart, optical dept. labeled "Zeiss Lens Cloth". Perhaps they make more than one but these are clearly labeled that they contain alcohol and are made to clean lenses with anti-reflective multi-layer coatings.

David, Thanks. The Walmart in Hanover carries nothing. The one in Weymouth carries the 20 Pak's as described above but they clearly state that they are alcohol free. Clearly they make several types. With yours how many to a package and can I assume that they are use once and throw away? Heading out of town Friday and just looking for someting throw away and inexpensive to throw in the bag.

Compare the SKU numbers of both. If the products are different, they MUST have a different SKU number.
