Remember, you are choosing a system, not a camera. Whether it's Canon or Nikon, you are not going to go wrong. I chose Nikon, and my choice was easy, I have two close friends who own a lot of Nikon lenses, and most importantly, they share. ;o)

This is not an equal contest. The Canon equivalent of the Nikon D7000 is the Canon Eos 60D. The Canon Eos 7D is bigger and heavier than the Nikon D7k. I have both because I prefer each for a different purpose: I use the Canon 7D for sports, wildlife, and studio work and I use the Nikon D7000 for street, travel, holidays, family etc. The Canon is more intuitive than the Nikon. The icons and fonts on the top LCD of the Nikon are rediculously small and force me to use my reading glasses, whereas the Canon has large icons and big fonts and is easy to read. You can't beat the Canon rear command dial for ease of operation, especially for EV compensation adjustment, and you can't beat the image replay controls. I can shoot and review with one hand, the Nikon often requires two hands. I use back-button focus and find that the AE-L/AF-L button on the rear of the Nikon D7K, which I assign as "AF ON" is too far to the left for my right thumb to reach it without changing my hold on the camera. The Canon's AE-L/AF-L button falls naturally under my thumb. The Nikon D7k uses a button in the centre of the AF-A/AF-M switch at lower right of the lens mount to configure the AF modes in conjunction with the front and rear command dials, which is great. I use one of the custom memory banks (U1, U2) to set the camera up for a three shot hand-held HDR sequence. On the Nikon I still have to set the drive mode to CH (Continuous High) seperately whereas the Canon remembers this as part of the custom memory bank setting in C1, C2 or C3. There are many other pro's and con's for both cameras. You need to touch and feel, sniff and taste, before you decide. Neither is "better" than the other but one or the other may be "better" for your needs and style of shooting.

I had a 7D for about 9 months and I was on a trip and took some video. The camera began to malfunction , but it wasn't immediately serious and by the time I heard about the over-heating issue, the one year guarantee had elapsed, by just a few days, and Canon refused to fix the camera. I've subsequently gotten two Canon 60Ds and they give me the quality I want for publications.

I can't believe this has gone on for five pages. It's like asking if I should buy a BMW or a M-B. Will it really make any difference? Please - don't start answering that? It was a rhetorical question.

Jerry,

Good thing you add that last line, I was going to answer you! Good morning!

I could never decide, although most of the people on the BMW site did recommend that I buy one of them.

Get both and test them. Keep the one you like and give me the other? LOL! I can't do it, I blew my wad for a while on my new lens.

I'm unclear. Are you planning for us to use your camera or are you going to be using it? Both are good cameras and as you will be the one using it you should be choosing the one that works best for you. We are an eclectic bunch with our own agendas so our vote is really mute. Personally, I own Canon so I would go with Canon. If I owned a Nikon (and I have several old film based units) I would vote Nikon.

So let me ask you, which one feels the best to you? Which one gives you that little extra rush when it it hits your hands. Answer that and you have your answer. :)

That is the bottom line. Normally my responce is basically what you have said. If it does not feel good in your hands you will not be happy with it.

If you can not find them in a local camera store find a camera club to attend. Photographers are great bunch and those at a club will normally be more than happy to let you hold their baby, for a few minutes, to try.

I think there are more Nikon users on UHH so the poll is likely to be skewed. I looked into both before I went FF and thought that both are outstanding - you can't go wrong. I would have bought the D7000 and that's my vote.
