If I were to guess. I would say that it is natural clipped light from above. I shoot this way all the time. Under an overhang with just natural light. It takes quite some time to learn how to post process the light to enhance it. Not for the novice. B&W images are easier to do this in post than color images. You have more latitude on the adjustments of light in post.

One of my examples.
The catchlights were natural as well as the light source. (No reflector of flash) I never did figure out where the catchlights came from. Some time I get them and sometimes not. I sometimes will add them. Notice the sunglasses. You can see the buildings where the sun source was coming from.

Angle of the light source is almost identical to your example.

Here's one of mine using natural light.

The shade from his cap complicates the issue.

That's a very slimmed down Jeff Bridges. Do you know how long ago that was taken? I understand why you like the lighting, very nice, dramatic, yet soft.

Lloyd Bridges was "Mike" on Sea Hunt.

Looking at the photo', it is evident that it was taken on sheet film, so perhaps the Sinar was used. If I remember from cenuries ago, the notch identity is Kodak Technical Pan film. Sorry if the digital experts are baffled by this explanation.

I hope this isn't bad form to just be blunt and simply ask "how'd he do this" This is a photo by Mark seliger who is my hero and a shooter I would most like to emulate. Yes I know he's probably using a $50,000 med format camera. Can any of ya'll tell if that key light is a shoot thru umbrella, beauty dish w/ sock I'm stumped thank you in advance

*******
This is one of him in colour - possibly taken at the same shoot.

This color image has character, too. I like how the black shadow, on his left, gives him a broken nose appearance, which in turn hints at toughness and understated menace. I guess some members would choose to throw at least some light into that area, yep that was my first thought. But the photographer got it right by avoiding that photo cliche, maybe that's why he's an ace photographer.

Thanks for posting, Radioman.

Ok..you can all jump down my throat, but I do not think that is such a hot photo for a few reasons. Great detail but that is it for me. The disembodied hand messing up the hair is very distracting..the pose awkward..altogether too artsy. What is the big mystery? Mark Seliger is a great photographer, but why did you choose this image?. Cmon..am I the only one?

Well...actually, copying someone else when starting out is a great way to learn. As you get better, you will develop your own style.

When I was in high school, one of my English teachers had us try to imitate the writing style of famous writers. Good idea. I continue to do the same thing - mostly on other people's checks. :D
