I got him a rubber armor coating for his camera. I'm sure that helped to keep it working.
Didn't do your lens any good.

I'm surprised that the camera still works perfectly. I bet having that plastic mount break off helped protect the camera - something like the crumple zone in front of modern cars.

Two years ago, I fell on ice, and my holder still isn't perfect.

That should be "shoulder," not "holder." That's what you get for typing on an iPad and letting it make decisions about words.

I'd like to see a test of both types of mounts in terms of camera damage. If the mount doesn't break, where are those forces directed? To the camera body?

Here's an idea. Buy some of those cheap "repair" cameras from eBay and also buy "for parts only" lenses. Then start dropping them and see what happens. No, I am not going to do this.

Hi jerry

Sorry to hear about your boy falling and breaking the 18-55mm lens that being said do you pay for his repairs or does he. Sounds like he need take a little more time (slowly) when out in wiles of the world. Maybe wrap himself in bubble wrap something but breaking two lenses gee like few others have said he need a new hobby?

Once again I am thankful to UHH for product information. I came home from three days in Boston, and my son told me that he slipped on some ice and fell on his D40, (That's one reason I didn't get him a D800. :D), breaking the 18-55mm lens mount. Just a few days ago, there was a discussion here about how those are available from Amazon. The lens seems to work, except for auto focus, so I took a big chance and ordered the 11 cent part ($4.99 shipping). Maybe when it's properly attached, it will focus. For five bucks, I'll take a chance.

I thought of getting one of those, but it defeats the purpose of the small, one-piece iPad.

I use to install metal shoes on Vivitar 283's at the owners request. Then when they an accident instead of the flash shoe breaking it normally would rip the hotshoe off of the body. Much more expensive to repair. I would always point out the danger to a customer but most still wanted the metal shoe. I made more money replacing top covers anyhow.

He is gainfully employed and pays his own bills. I splurged on the 11 cent mount, mainly to see what it's like. If it doesn't work, he'll probably get another lens from eBay.

He gets maximum use out of his stuff. He shoots with his Sony camcorder and D40 every day, and his Civic has 269,000 miles on it. He does get his money's worth out of his things, although he doesn't go to extremes to take care of them. Yet, they keep working, except for falls.

Hard to beat a Civic for the price. Here's what not to be wearing if you fall.

Whoever it was wasn't the brightest bulb in the lighting fixture. I've always wondered about the story behind the album cover.

I'm tooooooo familiar with ice after four years in Idaho and two winters in Colorado. I was skiing in NC one year and we had a good ice storm one night. Didn't bother putting on the boards until noon one day to let the ice get off the slopes. Good skiing after that until the shadows deepened near the trees later that afternoon. There is something about sound when your trying to catch an edge and you hear the screech of a ski edge on ice and you know you're in deep do-do. I can handle busting my ass on skis but the black ice on a highway is different. When you think you're going straight and the car starts to get sideways over a bridge you get religion really fast.

You can always buy another camera....body parts that work without complaint (mostly)and are original equipment can't be replaced. And I've never had a repair that worked as well as the original

It's hard to get original replacement parts for my outdated body. And I'm way out of warranty.
