I love horses and these guys are beautiful. So here is my edit. I have CS5 and did a lot to this image. Color adjustments, by way of selective color, hue and saturation, isolating areas that were very dark and working on them individually, healing and cloning tool to get rid of the spots all over the horses. I don't think those were scars, they looked more like noise.

Wendy, very nice! You worked miracles with that photo.

And some said it couldn't be done.

To really get it to snap, remove the extra legs under the left horse, plenty of grassy area to pp (clone)them out, and there is definitely a lot of definition to see the difference were one begins and the other ends to aid in this process.

Wendy,

That is awesome!! How much time did you spend?

I still stand by my statement that the photo is too much trouble for the final result. After all that work it still ends up to be an average photo at best. :-(

Thanks!!!! Spent about a half hour. Always like challenges and in doing this sort of thing, I get better at editing. I also like to help out, it's in my nature. Yes, not a great photo to begin with, so the outcome is so-so, but sure better than original!

A nice start Wendy. Now get rid of the trees in the back right and add a nice cloudy sky. Something light and fluffy. At that point I think you will have the best that can be done with this shot.

Very nice job. I tried and wasn't able to do nearly as well.

I think the "scars" are dust on the scanner surface or the photos themselves. I've learned you need to take Windex to the scanner glass before scanning.

As noted by others there is still some clean up of the extra legs but overall this pic probably isn't worth it.

Awesome efforts everyone. Just wondering if it is just me or is an extra leg from the 3rd horse still left in all of the edits.

Yes, there does seem to be an extra leg. I took out the extra ear and the tip of one, but neglected the 5th leg.

Thanks! Yes, there are bits of a 3rd horse and I didn't get rid of that extra leg!

That's abrilliant job Wendy. I did give it a go but could't even open up the shadow on the horses satisfactorily so quit.
You are really very good. Could you explain "colour adjustments by way of selective colour" a little for me please.

Hi infous, Selective color is in the CS programs and probably in Elements as well. I use CS5. When editing, there is a choice of Selective color. In very difficult situations, such as the shadows on the horses, I select the areas and work on just those and use Selective color to balance out colors.
