First of all, the hawk is so cool and your shots of it so excellent that let's take a breath there. Great photos.
Birdguide has it, or I believe is on the right track. Wow! dark variant Short-tailed Hawk. It is not a Marsh Hawk, no way, and not a cooper's hawk either. It is a Buteo, the genus of the Red-tailed Hawk. But like the Red-tailed hawk in the Americas the Buteos break the rules. They are much more like the tropical Hawk-Eagles. Do you have any idea how hard it is to catch a dove with your fee?

Agree with Bird guide ...light changes colors and often it is hard for identification purposes...but whatever it is...it is a nice shot .

I believe it is a Sharp Shinned Hawk. They are smaller than the Red Shouldered and have the same barring on the tail as ones I have taken pictures of. They look quite different from the front as it is a mottled rust color and the underside of the tail feathers are grey. From the back it looks exactly right. I get a lot of GOOD information from; WhatBird.com. There is a search that gives a lot of criteria to input and it comes up with a list of birds that fit the description. Click the name and you get a picture and a page of info about the bird.

I sort of agree with Birdguide, but the conundrum to me is the solid white on the face over the bill. I agree it is a dark phase, but of whom, a Harlan's? I don't thinks so. It doesn't fit an Accipiter. I sort of go with Short-tailed Hawk. Color, size and that Short-tails are aerial hunters. I don't think a Harlan's would go after a dove, but Short-tails would. Without a frontal view or shots of the underside of the bird it is tough to give a definitive ID. Just my 2 cents!

I guess I'll chime in and say I don't think it's a Coopers or Sharp-shinned. We have both of these hawks in our yard from time to time, and your hawk looks completely different from from any I've seen. Very good shots though, Doris.
