Hawk, not a great shot, but I got it! If anyone knows what kind of hawk this is, please let me know and thank you in advance.

Hawk looks like it could be a Marsh Hawk or Sparrow hawk.
BUT I aint much of a birder.
I do know the Marsh Hawks have tail bands are are that approximate size.
I believe sparrow hawks prey on pidgeons.
This hawk is smaller than the red tail, which is why the marsh hawk comes to mind.
Happy to stand corrected by a real birder.
Googled SPARROW Hawk= American Kestrel, no way this is a Kestrel
Back again, Marsh hawk is common name for Northern Harrier, low flier, feeds on mice and snakes.
So Nope, not a Harrier.
And I can't find my bird book.
BUT I aint much of a birder.

Jpyfullee that is a tough one, go back and get a shot from the front OK :wink: My best crack at it would be a dark morph (color phase) Short tailed Hawk. They are uncommon and not likely to be seen in the US anywhere other than Florida, there are a few that make it into southern Texas and some records from the Mexican/Arizona border area. The dark morph Broad Winged Hawk may be a candidate to, though to me they don't usually look as grey as your bird does, but lighting can change a birds appearance and leads to lots of confusion. So just go back and get a shot from the front and we can figure this out, would be interested to hear what other birders think: Nice images BTW :thumbup:

I'm on my patio all fenced in and that hawk sweeps down into the trees, grabs that Dove and swoops down onto the street below. I'm running around trying to find a spot, (through trees, shrubs and a chain link fence) to catch a photo. :-)
On the optimistic side, I think I've seen this hawk several times before. Spotted him just yesterday, but by the time my camera got focused he had flown off. So, there is a possibility that I might catch him again.

Great shots, Joyfullee, enjoyed them all. I think the hawk is a Coopers Hawk, great shot.

To me it looks a lot like the female Sharp-shinned hawk that terrorizes our bird feeders. Doves are also her food of choice. Birdguide makes a good point, a frontal view of the bird would be very helpful for identification. Hopefully someone will come along with a positive ID for you.
