thanks Marlon for the original question and all the answers... very helpful
Hello all, and Imagemeister, In your last post on this thread you mentioned the Canon 2X or the Tamron SP 2x. Those are both tele-extenders. I will be going to Costa Rica early next month. I have a Canon 70-200 f4 HSM, and would be taking it along on the trip. I also want to take some other lenses, but they don't match up to a Canon extender. So, the Tamron sounds good for the trip to give some more reach. What is your take on this extender?

I was a bit surprised that B&H had (after rebates and adjustments) virtually the same price on US and grey market lenses. Doesn't the US warranty carry any added value (at least for US shoppers)?
Companies like Canon and Nikon (even Tamron & Sigma for that matter) offer large distributors like B&H refunds or incentives on certain items. These refunds are not available for the grey market items. Also, when you see that some items offer free shipping and some don't, that has nothing to do with B&H. Companies, such as Canon, tell B&H that they will cover shipping in the cost.

I cannot say enough regarding Tamron converters. Right now I have the cheap 4 element version that goes behind my 70-200 F4 L - and totally satisfied ! used for image below. I have the more expensive 5 element SP version behind the Sigma 100-300. The SP versions come in black or white to match lens.
Sorry, forgot to say 1.4X converters above.

I have the old tamron as well as the canon converters. The old tamron will make my 400 f/5.6 af work without taping the pins.

Grammieb, I have not used the Tamron. I would suppose the Canon 1.4X to have better IQ. If it is better, I would prefer the Canon with the taped pins. I think the only drawback is if you are swapping it back and forth with another lens.
Don't you think?
Many lenses will physically not accept the Canon converters, where they will accept Tamrons.

I have a f/4 lens that I use a converter on sometimes & a f/2.8 lens that I use a converter on sometimes. I use my Canon converters on them & my Tamron f1.4 converter on my 400 f/5.6 when I want more reach.
