Among his macro-photography peers, Scott has earned respect and admiration for his consistent macro results, and his knowledge of macro-photography.

I completely concur with his comments concerning lens evaluations.

I have the Canon 100 mm. It is not an L lens but it sure thinks it is! Sharp, sharp, sharp!

Thanks. With the current recommendations and a limited budget, that's the one I will probably go with.

Just be aware that if you want the Canon tripod collar for this lens, it will set you back another $170 unless you get an off-brand copy. And, the lens hood is separate, too. :(

I bought the Ver II of the 100 with IS a little over a year ago and then picked up a tripod collar, 'space age plastic,' seemingly tough as a boot, for around $10 on Amazon and haven't had my lens fall off yet. Seems steady as a rock. Try this as a "search" in Amazon:

Tripod Collar Mount Ring for the Canon EF 100MM f/2.8 Macro USM

When I was using a full frame Canon 5D I purchased both the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Ex DG OS HSM Macro Lens and the Canon 100mm IS F2.8L Macro to compare them. I ended up keeping the Canon and sending the Sigma back. Both were very good, but I felt the IS on the Canon worked better. I mostly took photos of flowers and didn't use a tripod that much for this. Both also make a great portrait lens.
Here is a link to both lens I used if interested:

In the Sigma folder the photos with the focus chart were taken with a tripod, everything else was hand held.

If you can't afford the L lens then consider the 100 f/2.8 USM or the Tokina 100mm Macro. Both lenses are excellent, the 100 L is the better than the others, it actually is a little sharper than the USM which seems almost impossible. If you go over to the Macro Section and browse some of the poster named fstop22 you can see his work that he does using the Tokina, it is also a very impressive lens, he has invested a lot of effort in learning to use his camera, but his pics are as good as any I have seen using a 100mm macro by regardless of manufacturer. Stay away from the 180mm lens, it is an excellent lens but will bring you nothing but heart ache in the field.
