Superb shots! I see you shot the golden eagle in Av. Can you explain your thought process for doing that? I would have thought with moving subjects, you’d choose Tv. Maybe with the great light and wide open aperture, you just knew shutter speed would be plenty fast?

Btw, I don’t see any EXIF data on the bald eagle shot. Am I missing something?

I shoot all my wildlife shots in Aperture Priority mode because I want to control the depth of field. Speed is always a lesser issue as most wildlife does not move so fast as to require it. I use ISO 200 on a sunny day with a long lens as a general rule, and that almost always gets me between 1/800sec and 1/1600sec which is plenty fast enough. If I want to consider motion blur on flapping wings I just click down to ISO 100 and I can often catch that wing blur.
The bald eagle shot was cropped in Photoshop 5.0 which is the program I use for quick edits much of the time, its very old but so am I and we are comfortable together. Unfortunately that old photoshop does not preserve EXIF data when it is used on an image so the date gets stripped even in the case of no other editing being done beyond that cropping.

Thanks Bob, I don't get out as much as I did when I was younger, but I do enjoy it.

Erv

Thanks Erv. I've been stalking that family of Goldens for 2 months now and these are the first decent shots I have gotten of any of them, and by accident no less.

Ya just gotta love it when a plan comes together  Nice captures!

I think you still got an immature Bald Eagle. Golden Eagles do not have any white under their wings. I made the same mistake.

This is a sub-adult Golden Eagle, they do not get their full adult coloration until 5-6 years of age. Sub adults often have large amounts of white under their wings, on their backs and even sometimes in their tails. This particular bird is likely 2 1/2 years old and I have observed it and its sibling in flight with both adults of the family on numerous occasions over the past year and a half.

I was set up on an immature bald eagle in a field today when I caught a glimpse of something in the sky. I looked up just in time to see a Golden eagle flying my way. I swung my lens around and grabbed these 3 consecutive shots before it flew off into the trees. These are untouched originals right out of the camera. I was shooting RAW + JPG Basic at the time, these are the JPGs.
The last one looks like he is clearly sending a message with his claw, telling me to (politely) get lost! LOL
I hope some of you like these. EXIF data is intact for those detail peekers.
I was set up on an immature bald eagle in a field ... (show quote)

Not clear if you were using a tripod or hand held. I'm guessing tripod. Do you ever hand hold the 800mm?
