Tom, probably not better but more available, check out sporting goods/hunting stores, lots of warm and well engineered gloves. And they come in camo!

I purchased a pair of 'smart wool' gloves which have 'spots' on the finger and thumb. Meant for texting, but are thin enough for working a camera. If it's really cold, like today, I put a pair of 'Twittens' overtop of them - these are like the ones already recommended with finger/thumb flip backs. This dual system works well for me.

I bought a pair of Fishing Glomitts at Cabela's online. They are a light weight, wind proof mitten that folds over a fingerless glove. They are not expensive, come in sizes up to 2xl, and are currently on sale.

On a related topic last mongth we had a great suggestion by one of the professional photogrphers in our club. He was preparing us for a night-time shoot which can be crisp in Idaho.

If you use a tripod outside when it is cold you'll notice the metal of the tripod gets cold enough to stick your fingers like the boys tongue in Christmas Story. He bought a length of pipe instulation (about $2) at Home depot and cut it into three lengths to cover the top section of the tripod. It sticks togethter itself and you add a couple of zip ties. Works like a charm and looks fine.

There are different diameters so be sure to get one that goes around your top post snug but able to stick together.

Hi Tomo, I wear a pair of Peter Storm fingerless gloves in conjunction with a pair of XL mittens. The mittens are fixed by a tape so you can slip them off and let them dangle while you take your pic and slipped on again o/c. Worked for me in the arctic. Happy New Year

I use the carpenters work glove you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot. They are not the warmest but I like that they are thin, have grip and allow me to do the settings without removing them. When it is really cold I wear the neoprene gloves. They have great grip and I can adjust my zoom and my shutter speed without removing them. Not great for the other settings though. Neoprene gloves are typically found in the fishing department of Wal-Mart, K-mart, Sears, etc. but scuba diving stores may have better options. a couple links for examples of Neoprene.

Any gloves for snow mobiling and ATV riding. Gloves for farm/ranch work.

I was at a ranch supply BBS last weekend and saw some gloves that had cutoff finger tips, with a fold over mitten type of cover over the bare fingertips. A button of magnet on the palm and foldover held them closed, or open with the same button on the back.

$14

I use thin glove liners under the fold-back mittens. You can stick your trigger finger out without uncovering the rest of your hand or fold back all the way if you want. Also, you can put thin toe warmers in the fold-back part so they are on top of your fingers (these toe warmers are thin & have adhesive strips to keep them in place).

I use hunting mittens they are like fingerless gloves with a mitten type cover that flips back exposing all but your thumb and they are very reasonably priced at Wally World

I could have used a good pair of snow gloves Saturday.
My bike gloves would have been real good, but I didn't bring them with me. Dang.

My boys and their girlfriends.

I second that, I've been using North Face E-Tip gloves for over a year, shooting motocross and Equestrian in really cold weather and if you get a Large size (if you're a 'medium hand size) then you can still wear a pair of woolen fingerless mitts underneath...won't feel the cold then LOL
