I bought some gloves/mittens for an eagle-watching trip up to the Skagit Valley in northern WA. The mittens fold back to expose the gloves with no fingertips. They worked fine.

I bought a cheap pair of no-name gloves at the local discount store. I can pull back the top layer of the glove (it looks like a mitten) and my fingers are free to take the photo. When the photo's finished, I just put the mitten back and my fingers stay warm.

I use wool mittens with the fold back section over the fingers. It velcros to stay closed when not shooting. Underneath, I use either silk or light weight synthetic knit gloves. That way, you have your fingers covered, but the gloves are lightweight enough to push the shutter button etc. I like to think that with mittens my fingers keep each other warm.

I friend of mine husband bought her some without fingers from Amazon. We went out several hours along the Tennessee river today looking for eagles in high 30.s to low 40's. She said they worked well, but we are in north Alabama. Had 2 folks tell me that one flies around the spillway of Wilson Dam like clockwork at 9 AM. It never showed up.

I got a pair of mittens with an inner glove with fingers, the mitten end folds back and your fingers are still covered. also there is room for the HOT pads inside the mitten end. Can't remember the name. I'll look in my amazon history for a name.

I use hunting gloves that are essentially mittens but the top of the mitten folds back to reveal fingers that are 3/4 covered. Just flip back when finished with the photo. Very practical and very reasonable and warm to boot..

try the POW, I just got these and they are about the best I have found, and I have played around with a few. Bought them from backcountry., it is a mitten and then it folds over to reveal the index.

I use thinsulate mitts with the fold back fingers. I found gloves with single digit fold back finger tip do not warm up the exposed finger when covered again. With the mitts all the fingers are together and increase the speed in which they warm up. The ones I have a rubberized pad on the thumb, palm and finger tip cover pad. This helps maintain grip on the camera when carrying it and not taking pictures. I got mine in a sporting good store. When out for a long time like when cross country skiing I have a pair of tight thinsulate gloves inside a good pair of mitts.

Well having once lived in Wisc. for 7 yrs. (Milwaukee) I know how cold it gets.... I don't miss it but if they have gloves where the top folds back and 1/2 of your fingers are free those work good, but might not be heavy enough. The ones I wear in No. CA, are a light weight. These gloves above do give you the freedom to work your camera.

I did just recently purchase some Isotoner Smart touch 2.0 gloves from Adorama.. They are fully covered gloves but in 3 of the fingers of each glove, is a small corner of a mesh for 1/3 of the finger tip, which allows you to use your cell phone, Ipod or whatever. They do keep the hands warmed. You might take a look at them. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your ideas.

I will look at all these options very soon.

New Year's Day is supposed to be about 3 F in the AM here about 40 miles west of Milwaukee.

I think we will go skating on the lake.

Happy New Year to all and to all a Good Night.

I like mittens with slits that you can poke your fingers through for short periods. These work best with an underglove of pure silk.

Tom O, Michael O' : Re gloves suitable for photography, I have decades long worked in football (soccer that is) as a player, coach (including college), Instructor, Assessor, and assigner. I am a College (NISOA) National Assessor, and in cold, rainy, snowy, windy days of spending 3 hours out on and around a 100 X 120 yard field watching and taking detailed notes on a clipboard in prep for the detailed follow-up discussions and reports, I use gloves that are fairly warm but have a surface od tiny niblets of rubber to ensure control of my pen and to enable easy and sure handling of keys and such as needed. I use them usually from November thru the playoffs.

I have found that they also work very well for manipulating, operating, and controlling my Cannon EOS 1 and pair of 3s, Rollies, Linhof, Leica, and my EOS 5 D Mark II. The rubber gripping niblets ensure that a can securely control and operate the rigs and their primes, variables, and teles without making fumbling errors, and not endangering the equipment by losing my grip -- some of the combinations are heavy and unwieldy, as you're aware.

You can visit the official USSoccer and Canadian Federation supplier "officialsports.com", located these last 30 plus years at 4120 Corridor Dr., Warsaw, Indiana 46582, or phone them at 800 / 782-2614 or fax
them at 574 / 269-7653. Her husband, joint owner with Mary Lou, unfortunately passed on about 10 years ago, but their she, and their daughter and a number of other employees operate the company very smoothly in handling the US and Canadian Federations and a multitude of associations, clubs, coaches, and players. They are very fair, absolutely trustworthy, and have very good products. They will send to you a brochure or catalog if the web site does not provide sufficient info for you. I don't know if the non-slip gloves I like so well will suit you, but I'd suggest you give them a try. I have some I've had so long I don't remember the price, but I think it is between $15 and $20, which to me is a fair price for the security they provide. Check them out and see what you think. Ask them for their opinion on your intended use. Incidentally, I do NOT work for them, and never have, but own one or more of probably 3/4 of their offered products. I am dissatisfied with none of it.

By the way, they have soccer all weather gear that you might also find applicable to photo subject foraging in the rough, wet, and cold. Good luck with your photo work !
