Since we are on the topic of elements 11, I was wondering do you need the min photoshop program to run elements or can it be added to light room.
I currently use light room 4, and love it and have heard great things about elements as well.
At a recent trip to staples I was hoping they could clarify this, the sales rep told me that I needed full photoshop, then proceeded to try and sell that to me. I'm not sure if I was told this strictly because its his job to sell me up onto the more pricey software or if it indeed true.
I am using Bridge, to work with my photos, which works well with raw files.
Was given Lightroom 4 for christmas. In the process checking out how lightroom works and how it can help me out with photos.
Any tips for people who are starting out? Got "The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby. It seems to have everything covered, or at least covers a lot.
I was just wondering if anyone here had a " I wish I had know that before" moments? Or tips that might save me some grief in switching over.

I always start with LR4, and sometimes that's all I need. Someone might know more about this, but LR and PS or PSE deal with images in a different way - I mean at the base level. I heard it explained in an instructional video. Anyone have info on that?

I love LR4 for its non destructive qualities. I use it with Elements 10 and lots of Topaz plugins which are 40% off thru 12/31/12. Good luck.

I own and use PSE-10 most of the time. I purchased LR a few months back and have found, at least for me, that elements is the better of the two for PP work.
LR, I think, was mainly designed to be used for cataloging. It does an excellent job at that. I have found they compliment each other very well.

I agree with all that has been said. I use LR Professionally to batch process images taken under the same conditions - perfect. You only need PS when it comes to layers and cut outs etc. you wont regret it.
Southampton LR Queen has written the best book on the subject at under £30 - available amazon attached is the link to her site:

So this is all in Q&A format? Sounds interesting. It's on Amazon U. S. for $29.04.
Its a book of questions and answers questions asked by real Lightroom users on a variety of online forums. You can read it cover-to-cover, or you skip around and use it as a reference book. As a searchable eBook format, you can use the bookmarks or search facility to easily find the answers to your questions.
I stole that from the web site!!

Both programs are hard to use. They are both good. They are both different. They both do different types of editing. They compliment each other. They are both worth investing time to learn how to use and this is the only way you will learn to use.

Elements is a stand alone program. Nothing else is needed to run it. It is not a plugin. The sales person was either ignorant of the facts or trying to boost their commission.

NO, YOU DO NOT NEED IT! Many professionals don't even use it. If you obtain LR and PSE you will be able to do much of what PS can do. Not all, but a lot of the same things. PSE will probably have every thing you need for quite a while.

I love LR4! It is easy to get started & as you work with it & discover more & more tools it is likely you will do more than 90% of your pp work there & less in Photoshop. It interacts well with Photoshop for the editing you need to do there.

It is important to keep in mind that LR is a photographer's tool and was built from scratch by Adobe as such. It is waaay easier and much, much faster to use that PS and PSE, which are designed to serve the graphic arts community...While I have and use PS CS5 and love it for its "content aware" capabilities that I sometimes need to use, LR is easily the best tool around for photogs .
Note that LR is non-destructive editor and original images remain intact. ... I could go on and on about LR, but suffice it to say that it is a fine tool and seems to be getting better as more PS-type capabilities appear in it with each new release.
