I think the real abuse is among copyright holders. I've heard of individuals being sued for thousands of dollars for downloading a song or two.

I collect cartoons from the internet. I send them to a zoom lunch group that I am a member of. I see this as being within the fair use provision of the copyright. I don’t profit from the use.

So is there a significant difference between a zoom lunch group and a forum? No monetary gain in either case.

There is a fair use exception. However, the best practice is to watch what we post, and not violate someone's copyright just because we won't get caught.

Generally, copyright protection is to ensure an artists's/cartonists's/author's work is not used by someone else for monetary gain without permission or compensation. Although I can see where it's technically illegal (like jaywalking) once a piece is on the internet, I'm sure the originator is aware his/her work is going to be shared.

For an environmental conference I was organizing I once contacted Larson's office to ask if we could reproduce a cartoon as part of the advertising for the conference. I explained we were a not-for-profit organization (NH Dept. of Environmental Services), we would not use the cartoon to make money and it would benefit the environment. Larson's staff was sympathetic and said they understood his work was commonly reproduced for a variety of reasons but preferrd we wouldn't use his work as a general policy. They stopped short of saying they'd take legal action if we did. We ended up honoring their request.

The original dates from around 850AD so I think the copyright has expired. Roughly translated: “that passed, may this also”.

This is a message I got from Admin about a Far Side cartoon I posted in a thread a few months ago. The position of UHH on this is very clear. Debating this will get you nowhere.

I have been sharing clips and cartoons for "private "and community web sites since the mid-sixties. Unless there has been a change in the laws, it seemed to me that material in the public domain that did not result in economic gain for the re-user was never a legal problem.

"I think" is not a legal defense. 🤣

This goes further to convince me that there are A/H's in any company.

In some places more than others. I'm on a couple of other forums, and there is none of this nonsense. I've seen members apologize because they thought a comment might have been taken the wrong way.

Courtesy takes no effort. If you want to be mean, you have to work at it.

That's partly true but I've seen only one forum over the last 40 years where almost no "vitriol" took place. It was a very small group of around 30-40 people participating and only about 10 of them on a daily basis. Nowhere near the participation on here.

People can easily get their hackles up over almost anything. There is a huge difference between talking in person and the written word. Body and facial expressions are absent in the written communication and many (most) people are anything but experts in the written word.

A few actually try to be insulting, but most just don't recognize how they sound in writing. I've been doing this a long time and I still have to work hard not to be offending. More than once I've gone back and read a post I made and think, my, that was a bit harsh...

I don't try too hard if I think someone is trying to be offensive. Life on the forums is not always sugar and spice, and as been said a few million times, you need a thick skin.

I received the same pm from Admin for the same thread.

I sent him a link to a newly posted comic by another member and asked if all cartoons/comics were included. His reply:

"I can't give you legal advice. Each user is responsible for following all laws, including copyright."
