I'm seeking a better battery charger that will display state of charge, do rapid charging or more gentle/thorough slow charging. Currently using Panasonic BQ-CCSS chargers for Eneloop AA and AAA Ni-MH batteries. Any recommendations on your experiences here ? I have a large stable of batteries, some are getting long in tooth and I want to get max useage. Also, any thoughts on minimum useful discharge percentage before "retirement" ?

Thanks for ideas.

My goto charger for AA and AAA is the OPUS BT-C2400. I have 3 of them. I have 150 AAA's and 41 AA's. I also have an OPUS BT C-3400 that I use for C's, D's, 16340's, 18650's and 26650's. I use an adapter for the C's and D's due to size. Most of my AA's and AAA's are ENELOOPS but I also have good luck with EBL and Tenergy. I have PIR motion sensor puck lights all thru my house which is where most of the AAA's get used. I use a spreadsheet to keep track of charging history (date, current, mAh & Volts) and identify where each of my batteries are installed. I'm considering buying more EBL's because they hold 30% - 50% more mAh's than ENELOOPS which are rated conservatively.

Since years (2010?) I use La Crosse BC700. Nowaday about 50 euros.
This little charger does'nt have a special setting to charge quickly...it can just charge "slowly": 2500 mAh batteries need ca. 12 hours to be fully charged from "total empty" level.
It can charge eventuell just 1 battery...AAA or AA...or 2 up to 4 batteries at once...either mixed (AA+AAA) ...or only AA...or only AAA.
It also can DISCHARGE those batteries: it has a "special cycle" to "renew" old batteries: it discharges and recharges them during 24...28 hours...until they get a maximum of mAh and can't get more than this max.
Further more, while charging, one can set the charger to know for each battery (each battery has its own display):
- mA which are actually running (reading is always about 197 mA)
- how much Volts have the battery(ies) (reading is often 1,28 Volt)
- how much is the "capacity" in mAh (reading vary from battery to battery: 1800 mAh...2250 mAh...1400 mAh: depending how old/used they are)
In more than 10 years, I never had any issue with that little tool.
If You really need "fast charging" option, this charger won't fit Your need.

I also have that LaCrosse. It's mounted permanently with my other chargers. The one I bought recently is "portable."

If you push the "current" button, it cycles the charging current from 200 to 500, 700 and 1000. This works for all modes, the corresponding discharge current being half of the charge current. If you have the time, the slower you charge them, the better it is for the batteries, but 500 isn't too bad.

Provided I'm using the right batteries in the right charger, all I care about is when the batteries are charged.

I got a MAHA battery charger probably 10-12 years ago. It charges Eneloops nicely and gives an indication of how much they are charged. Many cheap chargers will charge batteries in series pairs so you need a number of batteries that is evenly divisible by 2. They will stop charging when one of the batteries is fully charged, leaving the other without a full charge. The MAHA charger charges each battery individually. It handles up to 8 simultaneously. Does AA and AAA.

Ditto on the MAHA chargers. 10 years and still works like new. Eneloops the best.

Bought a new charger for my ‘C’ and ‘D’ rechargeable batteries. So far in 6 months working great, three recharges so far. Still testing…Bonai charger and EBL 5000 mah ‘C’ btrys. Btry’s expensive but long lasting vs $$$$ multi purchase of Alkalines.

I use the Powerex MH-C9000PRO when I want to recondition my batteries. For everyday use, I use a couple of Powerex MH-C800S 8-Cell Smart Charger. Because I usually just want to get them charged up, rather than do time consuming reconditioning 4cels at a time.
