Right! That person who lost a lot of weight might have a horrible disease. I've seen that a few times on YouTube. A YouTuber will say that people have been congratulating him on his weight loss - which was caused by cancer.

As for holding a door open - "I don't need your phony chivalry. I'm perfectly capable of opening a door."

I avoid having people open the door for me.

Jerry--Next time you decide to send someone a compliment, you could run it by me and I could help you 'fine tune' it. Just a thought, my friend.

It's funny how some people can't take a compliment. In one of my groups, there is a woman in her 70s who is very attractive, despite not wearing makeup or doing anything with her hair. Being the thoughtful gentleman that I am, I thought I would pay her a compliment.

"You know, Pam, despite the fact that you're probably pushing 80, you're still a rather attractive woman. Although you seem to be letting yourself go, never wearing any makeup and not doing anything with your hair, just letting it run wild, you're still rather nice to look at."

I expected a big smile, but she made an ugly face and stormed away. Some people just can't take a compliment.

That is NOT a compliment. Words like "pushing 80," RATHER attractive," "not doing ANYTHING,"LETTING YOURSELF GO," "NOT doing ANYTHING," and the ultimate insult: "you're still RATHER NICE TO LOOK AT" are belittling and insulting.

Exactly right. In my older and hopefully wiser years, I've learned that women do not always appreciate candor, as many men are guilty of. It took me a while, but I eventually learned never to comment on a woman's impending pregnancy. The lady in question will have to tell me she is expecting, or I will need to see the baby's head crowning. So, ladies, if you are obviously pregnant, don't be offended if I don't mention your blessed event. You will have to tell me, or ... well, we won't go into the second observation.

Perhaps she didn't understand fully what you said. Perhaps she only heard "pushing 80" "leting yourself go and never wearing any make up". So she didn't take it as a compliment.

I don't see a compliment.

Such a compliment could start a war - stay away from politics.

Nope what I quote wasn't a compliment. But the entire thing that Jerry said (pretending to say) was a compliment. I said perhaps she only heard the bad part of what he said.
But anyway however he said it if the compliment is honest she would feel it and would not be upset.

Yes, I know. That's why I worded the post the way I did. I would never say anything like that to anyone. However, I have heard some "compliments" that have made me cringe. The person intended the remark to be complimentary, but he could have chosen his words better.

I've seen this in print several times - women who are expecting a baby do not want to be asked, "When is the baby due?" For one thing, what does it matter to the person asking? For another, too many people ask that question.

After all these decades, you're still easy on the eyes.
How could this not be taken as a compliment?

"...all these decades" would be a problem. Another bad one, "You must have been beautiful when you were younger."
