USMC 1970-1971. Was drafted into the Marines and served in Nam from Jan. to May in 71’. MOSs rifleman, recon man, and admin. I never was given a recon assignment but served in a rifle platoon running ambushes for a month. One day they called me on the radio saying my service record showed I could type. When I confirmed that I could, they picked me up in a helicopter the next morning and made me the company clerk. I was a corporal 18 months in and could have re-upped for sergeant but had a job waiting which would have been lost if I had extended.

USN 1975-1979 rank discharged E4 Machinist Mate. 2 years on the USS Oklahoma City CLG5 based in Yokosuka, Japan. Was the best tour because we were the flagship for the 7th fleet. Never stayed out at sea longer than 2 weeks and always went somewhere nice. Final duty was on a reserve "tin can" in Portland, Oregon. Portland was a really nice town.

US Army 1971-1974. I was graduating college and had a low draft number, so I signed up for Officer Candidate School and became a 2nd lieutenant, and left as a 1st lieutenant after my two year commitment was up. Vietnam was winding down and there were enough career officers volunteering, so I didn't have to go.

I was drafted out of college during Korean war (1952). Had two years in ROTC at Michigan State so was held at induction center at Fort Custer to help process new draftees. Job was to interview and assign MOS. Got to choose basic so picked Signal Corps. Went to Augusta Georgia, Camp Gordon (now Fort Eisenhower) for basic then to Fort Monmouth NJ for radio school. MOS is field radio repair. Then to Germany and assigned to 348 Ordnance Ballistics Technical Service Detachment, using electronic gear to calibrate and test heavy artillery. Rank at discharge was Corporal. Went back to Michigan State on GI bill which I am very thankful for.
