This shot turned out much better than I hoped. No time for a perfect rule-of-thirds composition.

I drove about 3/4 of a mile past this scene right at dusk before thinking, "What am I doing?" The light was fading fast and I knew I had to hurry, so I "whupped" the car around and flew back to that field, praying that the horse would still be there and that it wasn't already too dark for a good exposure. I whirled the car around and parked in the only possible location where I wouldn't block traffic (there was none on that country road, fortunately). I shot out the driver's side window with the ISO set to 2000 and the lens zoomed to the max (140 mm). That's all I recall about the exposure, because I was working very rapidly (I hate being rushed like that but I knew I had to work fast or the light would be gone). It was my 80th birthday. I think the horse and I were the same age.

I can fully identify with what you said, except I'm a few years younger than you

Happy Birthday.
Nice photo. The Rule of Thirds is a rule of thumb, not mandatory.

Not as far off as you might have been. The heavenly body - sun? moon? - is just about - though hardly precisely - on the 1/3 vertical, as your horizon is similarly related to a 1/3 horizontal. And, I should add, a lovely result, whether because of these measurements or not.

The picture is of a full moon.... the sun that high in the sky would not be photographable or produce the nice lighting which Jon got. Neat shot and, Jon, if it was a country road, just jam the stick-shift in reverse!!!!

P.S. Rule of thirds should never be considered...if it looks good, take the picture... and, it will fall under the rule of thirds BECAUSE IT LOOKS GOOD!!! Don't waste time thinking about 'rules'.

Adams really shouldnt have bothered, based simply on the result he managed to salvage.

OTOH, Jon has recorded an excellent scene. To my eyes it needs some PP but is basically waaaaay beyond Adams dismal moon scene.

You have a few years on me. That being said, I work was a pain in the butt know-it-all who quotes the rule of thirds as if he originally authored it. If all one knows about photography is the rule of thirds, end of discussion.

What I imagine as a little PP is to darken the sky enuf to make the moon more prominent, and also brighten and "snap up" that white horse such that the moon and horse visually echo each other across the empty expanse occupying much of the frame.

Happy Birthday Jon & Many, MANY Happy Returns!!!
IMHO, since this was your vision, all elements of your vision are wonderfully recorded.
Now, about that "rule of thirds". Well, I bet you had to consider that "pinkish band" of color starting just above the trees which helped to define your "rule of thirds".
As for me, I'm just happy to know a photographer good enough to combine all of these wonderful elements into one picture given the pressure of rapidly and drastically changing light.
Your new color blind friend . . .

Happy birthday. You got a nice shot. To heck with rules. Take subjects where they are.

This comment pretty much rules you out as someone whose critique I’d value.
