I hope it's true... just read a rumor that a 28-400 Nikon Z mount lens is in the pipeline. I really miss my Tamron 28-400 which doesn't work with the FTZ.

Nikon is a very secretive company. We read rumors for years that the D850 would be replaced by another DSLR like maybe a D860 or D880. There were rumors that they would produce a mirrorless camera with a 61MP sensor to match Sony. It didn't happen. What you're seeing may or may not be true, but the only way to know is to wait and find out.

This lens could be a versatile addition, especially for those who enjoy the Tamron 28-400mm flexibility.

I assume you meant the Tamron 18-400 since there is no Tamron 28-400 lens. Since Tamron now makes a few Nikon branded lenses under license for the Z mount, I think it may be a safe assumption that a new Z mount Nikon branded 28-400mm will likely be manufactured by Tamron for Nikon. I certainly hope it will be a better lens than the Tamron 18-400mm. As a superzoom lens it was one of the best available but as with all wide focal range superzooms it still had a number of serious flaws. I got rid of mine after around a year of use with no regrets.

I also read that a 28 - 400 Z lens is on the way. Wondering what it will cost.

Too heavy, too much zoom, too long zoomed out, just too too.

Yes, the Tamron is 18, the new Nikkor, if true, is 28. The only serious flaw I've found is that mine is an early copy that can't be firmware upgraded, so no functionality with the FTZ. Ostensibly, the official announcement will be Wednesday for the Nikon, so we'll see.

I expected the typical long zoom shortcomings when I bought the Tamron and it was actually a pleasant surprise to me that most of them didn't bother me much since I primarily use the center of the lens and shoot mostly in good light. If you're a pro or aspire to be one, it's probably not a good choice, but I have gotten good use out of it for my needs. Not long to wait if the rumor is true. Less distortion and fringing, faster focus, less vignetting would be my main requests.

Why your Tamron will not work on Z body?
May have different Tamron but with NTZ adapter works well

Don't know, but I went through quite a bit of searching for an answer a couple of years ago when I bought my Z50 and I've tried it on the Z7ii as well, no go. I have two FTZ adapters and no combination works. I learned that I had a very early copy of the 18-400 and it couldn't be upgraded. If you know an answer, I'd appreciate it as I could still use it on the Z50 even if I get the new Nikon (if it exists). I've had the Tamron for five years and it works fine on the D7500... also, I have a copy of the 16-300 which works with the FTZ's, but the AF is kind of hit or miss. (Sigma 150-600 works fine.)

Check Nikon's website for the page that shows what Nikon lenses are compatible with their mirrorless cameras and work with the adapter.
I have a Tamron 24-300 and the last time I checked that page it said that lens was not compatible and Nikon had no plans to make it compatible.

The one that I have is a 16-300 and I don't think it's supposed to work, but kind of does with glitchy AF. The 18-400 doesn't work (maybe manual, but that's not for me). I'm waiting and in the meantime the Z-mount 24-200 is doing well.

Yes, I am using the Z 24-200 lens with my Z8 and it works fine. To increase its reach you can set up a Z8 button to switch from FX to DX. That gives you the increased zoom effect and occasionally has its uses. Of course this reduces the pixel count.
Refer to Steve Perry's book re how to do this.

That would be interesting, but I am not too crazy for those wide to long tele super zooms as usually there is some compromise in IQ or with lens aberrations. It's nice to have a "do it all walkaround lens" on the camera all the time, but there are usually compromises. Let's see what Nikon can pull off with this one.

I'd rather see them make a 2x-5x macro lens, manual focus, to compete with some third parties that have it in the native Z mount (like this lens - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1805624-REG/astrhori_a24b_n_25mm_f2_8_full_frame.html)

Zeiss is the one that should be making this lens - it can be done very well - like the lens on the RX10 ! - even tho Tamron has been upping their came lately.....

Depending on the price this may be my only lens with an extender
