If I were to print it at home, I would want it to be in color and the cost would be enormous. It would cost much less if it were printed on a press in multiple copies.
Right, but Steve would have to find a company to do the printing, and that would another whole process.
In some cases, I have printed a page or two of a manual for future reference.

There are publishing companies who I am sure would be happy to publish his works. For example, Rocky Nook produces excellent instruction manuals at reasonable costs. There are other paper publishers as well. I don't think it is unsurmountable and I don't think the cost would be that much more to sell paper copies.

The stumbling block is the copyright. People have posted here that they couldn't get their pictures printed because the clerk thought they were done by a professional.
How do you update a hard copy book when a major firmware change is released?

It is done all the time with law books. It's really not a problem. For an update, I would be happy to use YouTube or something like that. But I really want a reference manual that I can lay my hands on and flip the pages. It's not a problem. Other people publish books on instructions how to use different cameras in paper. Of course the copyright holder gets a royalty. That's how it works.

Steve sent the original book, over 600 pages, and then the update, also over 600 pages. It's so easy if it's just a file, rather than a five-pound book.

I have been under the understanding that for quite while the printing of many books, such as the type we are discussing, is being done in China. That presents another whole dimension to the process. Maybe that has changed but I tend to doubt it.
Personal preference and to each his own. For me, I'll take the E-copy. Less expensive, no killing trees, no shipping, no room on my shelves, quick and easy online updates, ... I put my I-pad in my photo backpack, so I always have it with me. It's nice to have a large library I can take wherever I go.
I was a big fan of Steve's back in the day, back when my account functioned properly. Then something changed and I was no longer able to access my account; I reached out to his website administrator and the matter was never resolved. Now I am indifferent toward Steve and Backcountry Gallery. That plus I have almost no interest in wildlife photography any longer. HO HUM...

If I had the money, I'd add a room to my house and invite Stever Perry to move in. Alternatively, I'd ask him if I could move into his house. 😁
Steve is gold mine of photographic information, and I love what he has offered us about the Nikon Z cameras. When you buy one of his books, you can count on getting free updates when he produces them. Today, he offered a free update of his Z8/Z9 book (603 pages) and a free set of sheets for the Z8 and Z9.
Thank you, Steve!
Yes his BIF and BOW shots are amazing. He has many instructive videos on YT as he gives much of his knowledge and expertise away for free. On one occasion I caught one of his live streams - being able to ask him questions live is the next best thing to having him move into your house.
