That was at a time long, long ago in a land far, far away.

" long, long ago " True story there. I had my shot at one 56 years ago

If I had that much cash, . . . .

It's amazing, John. Shows like this one are like the pied piper to the rich boys. There was a whole gaggle of cars that sold from 2 million to 4 million dollars.

Excellent set, Tom, the MB 300SL is my choice by far, it is gorgeous.

I wouldn't argue that one with you, Earnest. I feel the same way.

Great set of images Tom. Given the selling prices, I don't blame the owner of the Bugatti with the brush. I'll bet he had a Do Not Touch sign somewhere too. The 55 Mercedes, roadster or gullwing, set a standard for performance and looks that I don't think has been surpassed to this day (sorry Enzo). Would that Mercedes be worth more as a gullwing?

Only issue I have with this posting Tom is that Bugatti is blocking the view of the Austin Healey behind it.

Hey, Reuss. I'm glad you dropped by. You touched on two interesting issues.

Touching cars is absolutely forbidden. There are ample warnings around that state that policy. I've never witnessed it but I've heard of people being escorted off the grounds for doing so. Typically. either the owner or an appointed person is also there to " guard " the car.

I'm shooting from the hip on this one but, assuming the cars are in equal condition, and of comparable provenance, I think the convertible 300 SL is more highly valued. If it to be driven at all, I feel absolutely certain that the convertible wins. Outward vision from the Gullwing is somewhat restricted. And the heat inside the car on hot days can be brutal. The one I drove had no AC....I don't think any of them did, but I'm not certain about that.

BTW.. all of the cars in that row were Bugatti's. You don't think that bunch would allow a lowly Austin Healy around, do you?

Absolutely agree. The gull wing is a rarer car, but not as practical - just two small air vents as I recall and no A/C. The 300SL roadster is actually a drivable, enjoyable car. There’s a 300SL featured in a recent issue of The Star that’s been owned by the same person since new, and although in concours condition, it’s still driven regularly. Oh and thanks again for all the great shots.

Hi, Chris.

I appreciate you taking the time to add to the discussion. It means a lot to me when folks, like yourself, can add interesting facts and insight about the issue or subject at hand.

The Bugatti is a 1938 Type 57 Atalante. In the second shot of this car, you can see the owner ( I believe ) using a brush to keep dust off of the car. I don't blame him. He sold the car at the Gooding auction held at Amelia for $2,050,000

The 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, shown below, sold for $1,850,000.

That's not a bad move. The Outback will never leave you stranded anywhere.
