Mr Sager: I have successful trained my 8 yr old Labrador/Dalmatian mix to grab the lens tightly in his mouth while I twist it to loosen.

Most Hawgsters dont have that particular mix.
This rubber strap wrench has never failed me.

For sake of clarity, there is more than one kind of filter wrench!

I would use this kind.
I would use this kind....

I wouldn't use this kind.

I've had good results just pressing the filter flat against my palm and extended fingers. Then pressing and turning my hand.

Buy brass metal filters in future. The aluminum ones lock up all the time.

You need the right tools for the job. Binford 6100 Filter Wrench, works every time!

Personally, I've found 'filter wrenches' to be a cruel joke. I stopped falling for this scam when I ordered a OXO Good Grips Jar Opener with Base Pad, useful for stuck filters and everyday jar lid problems.

I wonder if that OXO would work on my Breakthrough 77mm X4 Circular Polarizer; it is stuck again!

The Sensei filter wrenches failed - both of them broke as I tried to loosen this thing. (The guy at the camera shop evidently had no trouble last time.)

You'd get more from throwing that $10.99 in the toilet ...

What I just said above. Those plastic nonsense are worthless. The OXO comes with a rubber pad too. You could use that inside the OXO between the lens and the teeth of the OXO for a bit of grip and / or protection, specifically on the CPL. I'd expect the tool to work like a charm.

There is a tool consisting of a rubber band, 1/2" wide, pretty thick and maybe 10" long that slips thru a plastic handle. You wrap the band like a loop of a belt around a part and adjust tight then turn the part. Sold in hardware stores, maybe auto parts. I bought it to remove stuck parts on telescopes. Basically like using a loop in a pants belt.

I cannot unscrew a thin 95mm UV filter on my Nikon 200-500mm. I’ve tried gently taping it, tried to slightly tighten it, then reverse it, rubber bands around the filter frame for a better grip…all to no avail! Lens & filter inside a hard case in home and not banged around very much to loosen any grit\dust, etc., et al. Any good hints on this for me? Help!

Before you really mess up the lens, maybe you should take it to a reliable camera store and have them remove it. I have never had a filter that I couldn't remove with either a filter wrench or some kind of gripping material, but perhaps your filter is on too tight, cross threaded or has some other problem that is making removal difficult.

I've found that wrapping a rubber band around the filter, then using one of those cheap plastic filter wrenches will take the filter off easily. The rubber band gives the filter wrench something to get a good grip on.
