I'm not sure if I would even want to try fishing in that stream.

Looks a bit too rocky for a Kayak, beautiful photos.

In Deliverance they used canoes and I don't think those would have a chance. Is the water always muddy. That is usually a sign of high water.

Thanks for the visit. I know very little about fishing mountain waters.

Thanks for looking in and for commenting. I guess the hardcore bunch looks at it in a different light.

Hey, Spike.

I've never seen this river, or at least this section of it, look any different than this as to clarity. I have seen it with higher water levels.

That's a beautiful river Tom but I image the reason that the kayakers come later in the year when the water is up is because, attempting to kayak that river as it is shown in these images wouldn't be fun, it would be work. You'd spend most of your time walking with your kayak because it's too shallow to float any great distance. Higher, faster water is no problem for experienced kayakers. It's the technical nature of the course that draws them and these large rocks would create some great hydraulics that would be really challenging. Your buddy is really lucky to have a front row seat. BTW, what's the name of that river?
That's a beautiful river Tom but I image the reaso... (show quote)

That is the Watauga River

Interesting factoid for you. Checked Google maps for the river but could only find Watauga County. Assuming the river is in the county, then it is probably the headwaters for the New River. North Fork of the New River splits out into creeks about 10 miles north of county line. The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world and the only river in the east that flows north through the Appalachians into the Ohio River and then into Mississippi. But before the recent ice ages several millions years ago, it flowed into what was to become the Gulf of Mexico which at that time extended almost to the Canadian border.

BTW, that's beautiful country. Used to travel from Asheville to Wytheville via interstates frequently and am familiar with the Mt. Rogers NRA.

My assessment would be "how far do I think I can walk carrying a kayak in that river?"

I'm standing on the rear deck of a friends house up in the mountains. He said that section of the river is well known for its challenges and, in warmer weather, they come down that river all the time, raging water and rocks be damned.

Must be a very low tide, Mamba

I pulled up a map that shows the Watauga river. I can spot exactly the area where his home is. I've done some tubing in parts of the New River near West Jefferson City, N.C.
