Jury Duty

For a long time I want to get on a jury just to see what it was like. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. I was on a jury for an attempted rape case and was afraid we might turn a rapist loose, or on the other hand that we might send an innocent man to prison. Ironically, it was the prosecutions case that convinced me to vote not guilty, they presented some video that contradicted the testimony of the alleged victim.

Interesting story, from the Readers' Digest if I remember right. A man was asking to be excused from jury duty and explained to the judge that he couldn't be there because his wife was about to conceive a baby.

"You mean deliver a baby don't you?" the judge said.

"That's what I said, she is going to conceive a baby."

"Well, in either case, I think you should be there, you are excused."

Absolutely bloody nothing. However please please please READ the section title which I will repeat here - "General Chit-Chat (non-photography talk)". Please please please note the hyphenated word "non-photography".
If it upsets you then DON'T READ this section. Or now that I have pointed it out to you, you can avoid it in the future.
This query seems to crop up once a week or so which makes me think that some users are a tad slow on the uptake. Apologies if this upsets a few of you.

Statistics prove the rates of recidivism are indeed high. Provable by long criminal records.

There are people who don't mind living in prison for limited stretches of time. The guy who carjacked me told me that very thing. Their profession is crime even though the financial rewards are sporadic. It's a cultural choice, not entirely different from able bodied persons who choose to live off working people legally through government programs designed to secure their votes. The driver for this is a deep rooted sense of entitlement that is very hard to cure.

I received a notice from the County Clerk telling me that I'm on the list of potential jurors. I filled out the lengthy form online, and I'll see what happens. They know my date of birth, so they know I'm almost 80, if that makes any difference.

I was called about thirty years ago, and I was looking forward to being on a jury, but I was dismissed. My son was on a grand jury, and he found that very interesting. He was surprised that the drug dealers were so well educated and so well spoken.

Served back approx. 40 yrs. ago on a murder charge. The sad part was we had to wait until they called the judge and other parties involved at 3a.m. in the morning when we reached the verdict. This took place at the Lake Conty courthouse in Indiana and is a very large center of County buildings. The charged person had a group of friends and relatives present at the reading of the verdict and believe me they had daggers in their eyes looking at us. What really upset me was that we all had to leave the building and walk to our vehicles which were all a hundred yards or more away in the now empty lot. Several of us had to escort a few of the women on the jury to their respective vehicles.

I served on the Grand Jury a couple of years ago, and was quite impressed by the job our law enforcement officers are doing, riding our country of the scum that is out there. The drug dealers, the child molesters, and the embezzlers, to name a few. Was very interesting, but also sad.

I'm about the same age as you, I called the county and told them my age and they said I could get off the jury list permanently, so I did. Interestingly enough I started to wonder if I really did want off permanently ... guess I am never satisfied??

A long time ago I was called for jury duty. I asked the Judge to excuse me as I was a Probation/Parole Officer. The Judge said no, but that one of the attorneys might strike me for cause. During the interview process the Defense Attorney asked us all if we knew the defendant. I raised my hand and he asked how I knew him? I looked at the Judge and then explained that he had threatened to kill me a number of years before when I arrested him on a parole warrant. I was then excused.

That's exactly right. Members of the jury are supposed to only base their decisions on what they heard and learned while in the courtroom during the course of the trial. Everything else is to be left at the door. For people who work in law enforcement and the legal profession, this can be very difficult for them.

It can be difficult for others as well. My wife is a second grade teacher and was selected for a jury pool in a child molestation case. She told the judge she didn’t think she could present an un-biased opinion and was excused.

Jerry I was called quite some time ago for a potential jury for a murder and arson trial where two young girls were killed. When the judge learned that the aunt of one of the girls worked as a secretary for me and the wife of the prosecutor was a professional colleague it didn’t take long for me to be dismissed.

In Massachusetts you can ask to be excused if you are age 70 or older.

The same also applies in Michigan if you apply.

I've been called three times. However, having worked as a criminal defense investigator here on the Western Slope of Colorado since 1997, and in that time, have worked for DAs in private practice and most of the judges when they were in private practice, I'm tossed. My best time is 5:45.

Just a hunch but it seems you would make a great juror and a help in the jury's chamber. You probably know a lot about being objective. Of course, if you have a history with someone in the court, that would be a reason to be excluded.
