In the mountains of the West United States is a bird I see quite often. I was first introduced to it as a young boy while fishing the high mountain lakes with my father. It's call a Gray Jay or known by many as a Camp Robber.

Not to be mistaken with the Clark's Nutcracker who can inhabit the same areas in many places.

Jays come from the magpie family the magpie is commonly known as the thief bird so i can see where the robber description comes in very apt.

If you look closely at that nutcracker it,s bill is NOT indicative of a nut eating bird a nut eater normally has a short bill long bills normally say seed eaters so I find this quiet interesting.

Perhaps the reason for the long bill of the Clark's Nutcracker is the live in higher elevations of pine forests of the west. The get their seeds from placing their beaks into pine cones. They get as many as they can carry in their mouth and then go hide them for winter. They have a great ability to remember where they hide their seeds. But the one they forget or don't use help regenerate the pine forests of the west. It's just a another marvel of how nature works together, to make this wonderful world.

And talking about the magpies, I just happen to have a few photos of that bird too and this is a good time to post them for those following and who aren't familiar with the way they look.

1 for sorrow
2 for joy
3 for a girl
4 for a boy
5 for silver
6 for gold
7 for a secret never to be told
8 is a wish
9 is a kiss
10 is a bird you must not miss.........MAGPIE
Just a silly rhyme we have over here when referring to a magpie, we also salute a single magpie to ward off bad luck as 1 is sorrow.

I've always referred to the magpie as the "Coyote of the sky..." Ian Tyson has a neat some about the Magpie.

I happen to think they are pretty cool and can be a very good friend in the back country and wilderness areas. If ya see a bunch of magpies steer clear.. probably not a good thing a lies ahead. ;-)

Was in the thick stuff watching him for about an hour and after he chewed his cud a bit and a brief nap he decided to move off... I took this before he departed.

Whew!
I'm not sure which I admire and appreciate more:
1. these AMAZING photos

or

2. your ability and experience of getting out there to TAKE them!

Regardless... I JUST found this thread and will play along in a bit, if you like. (Just don't expect them to be anywhere NEAR as stellar as your work! Deal!? *grins* )
