That and also if you present an air of a knowledgeable person the defense lawyer will reject you. They do not want people who are objective or have the ability to think. A jury of your peers? Not likely.

I have been on several juries but I was routinely rejected as a 20 year old. It made me really try to get selected, I tried a suit, blue jeans, but when I walked in in my motorcycle leather jacket, boots, gloves, helmet it was a go! Always puzzled me. Lol.

The best excuse to get out of jury duty I ever heard as when the judge asked a lady if she had prior knowledge of the defendant in a drunk driving charge, she very angrily responded, “All I know is that he is a drunken alcoholic no good bum!” “ Your excused ma’am!

I was in the middle of a big project at work when I was called for an auto accident trial
I tried to be excused, but no-go....
During selection they asked if anyone worked for an insurance company, then I remembered that several corporate levels up our parent company was owned by an insurance company.....
EXCUSED!

I was called for jury duty where the girl was claiming the ex-boyfriend assaulted her, which he denied. When they got to questioning me I said I didn't care to get involved in a "he said/she said" situation. I was dismissed.

Pardon me, no pun intended, but I can't tell if you are serious or trolling. You immediately denigrated both the plaintiff and the defendant by implying that neither party's testimony could be trusted. At least you were asked to serve again. Thanks for sharing.

Reuss!!
Did I hear the calliope playing!?!?!?

I'm tellin' ya!!! That dude did not put me in a carnival / circus mood!!!!
If I'd lost control and jumped up and popped off to him, I'd have told him, "So, you can't rollerskate in a buffalo herd, then just get out of here and go take your chances rollerskating in an angry elephant herd.".
(No, I would not really have been that kind and civil to him!!!)

I was on a jury about 4 or 5 years ago. It was a murder trial - third one for the defendant for the same murder. We were in court for a week - lunches were catered, so we didn't have to leave to get lunch. It was pretty interesting. Just before we were to start deliberations, the judge delivere a bench verdict, I believe it's called. He ruled that the prosecution did not present enough evidence to prove the defendant committed the murder, and declared her not guilty. I'm pretty sure the jury, from my discussions with them as we were leaving, being escorted to the parking lot, would have found her guilty pretty quickly. After a few days of being a bit let down at not being able to deliberate the verdict, I could kind of see his point - they really didn't do a very good job of proving she did it. But still, no doubt in my mind she did. It happens. I still thought it was a worthwhile experience, but then I'm retired and had no pressure from being away from work. You sound like you would be a good juror, no matter the age.

Why can't scumbags just accept that they did the deed and plead guilty ? They all seem to think that if they plead not guilty that they will get away with it. It is almost as if you can work out their IQ from their plea. Or in some cases the IQ of their lawyers.

Aren't the penalties lighter for those who plead guilty?

I received a notice from the County Clerk telling me that I'm on the list of potential jurors. I filled out the lengthy form online, and I'll see what happens. They know my date of birth, so they know I'm almost 80, if that makes any difference.

I was called about thirty years ago, and I was looking forward to being on a jury, but I was dismissed. My son was on a grand jury, and he found that very interesting. He was surprised that the drug dealers were so well educated and so well spoken.

I consider it a privilege to be chosen as a juror. This is an essential part of our justice system. As a citizen of the United States,I would be honored.

One time, the bailiff asked those of us to raise our hands who had notes from our employers stating that we should be excused because we are needed at work. Many of those in Juror selection raised their hands. The bailiff told those people to put them away in a safe place. Then he went on to tell them that when they wanted a raise to show that letter to their employer.

Now that is hysterical.

On an interesting note you could pull out your ukulele when sequestered and entertain the other jurors. Perhaps, you could teach a few of them and sell some instruments in the courtyard.

I do like your new avatar. It is very becoming of you. You do look like a 30 year old who I would wave too.

You could have a thread on how to create an avatar. What to include in it and what not to include in it,if you know what I mean. Hint! Wink! Wink!

PS: Perhaps we could open a thread and have recipes there. I have a few recipes that I could share.

As for jury duty, I'll see if they want me. If not, I'll send them your name. 😁

As for recipes, I'm always open to suggestions.

If you are over 70, you don't need a report from a doctor for medical reasons to be excused from jury duty. Just fill in what the medical reason is. Chances are you will be excused.

Sometimes the penalties are lighter but that is defined in the law and at the Judge’s discretion!

Sadly, criminals are not always aware that all of us being watched. Remember, people hide in bushes, on the roofs of buildings and even in the spaceships. Occasionally they hide behind sewer grates, under couches and walk around with out a leash in a phony dog costume. Just kidding!

When people are raised to respect others, they don’t commit crimes. I can tell you a bunch of silly stories how the criminal mind can work.

That is not a problem for me. It reminds me of something my dad said years ago.
They should select older people for jury duty. Older people are retired so they don’t have an excuse. They have seen more of the world and it’s stupid people. Finally, they are like our parents who would not hesitate to punishing criminals.

I can imagine a TV comedy sketch with a room full of 80-year-old jurors. I'm laughing already. 🤣

Now that would be a great sketch. Every one of the jurors can be old men and women, perhaps some might have a romance on the side, the Judge and the lawyers are just out of law school. Even the janitor who cleans up is a kid. I would be laughing as hard a I could.

I work for the court here in Butte County Calif. Our summons on the back bottom right there is a check box asking to be excused I am over 70 for health reasons. They are not hard to deal with on this. Also I work for our local SO and have yet to hear of anyone arrested for not showing up. If you actually do want to serve they will defer your date for really most any reason.
