When I got my first Nikon digital camera, a D200, way back when, I went to a Nikon School program that recommended to always use a card reader to download images. At that time they did not recommend using any computer's built in card reader slot as there was always a small chance that the computer could transfer something to the card that then got transferred to the camera. I know that many pho pho such recommendations, but I always wanted to follow the safest and most secure way to do things.

Arg, my sides hurt...

And the reader gets plugged into the computer....
What, is the external reader a filter?????

A card reader in the computer is the same kind of reader in an external.
The only difference is one is fixed in a large box and the other in a small portable box.
Same guts....

My old MacBookPro had a SD slot, my middle MacBookPro did not, I was unhappy with that every time I downloaded pics. My newest MacBookPro has the SD slot. People complained, Apple listened. Now you have a reason to buy another Mac. ;)

Being able to download directly from a camera can be a plus as well as recharging the battery without removing it from a camera. But what if a power strike takes place when you are doing this? I know this is a remote event, but things like this do happen from time to time, especially when you are in unfamiliar environments like a foreign country.

What does Vietnamese noodle soup have to do with any of this.

Why would anyone use a card reader when there are more direct ways to load photos onto a computer, like using a USB cable?

Why not use a card reader?

Now you did it, you burst his balloon, or maybe you killed a sacred cow or something like that.

...... Like, data moves faster through a short cable than a long one.
"Technically", yes, but.....

Card readers can be okay, but you have to be careful.

Why argue about something like this? It is just a matter of which one you prefer. Both ways give you the same thing.

I think the OP wanted to get opinions, and he certainly did. That's what this site is all about.

Personal preference, that's all......

One can walk two blocks over and three blocks up,
or one can walk three blocks up and two blocks over,
which is the best way or "right"?
And people will argue over it.....

I prefer a usb cable. I don't like pulling my cards in and out all the time.

You are using a $20 card reader as opposed to $2000. Camera. What do you want to put more use on

Not all readers are made the same. I have on that Plugs into a 15' long TeatherTools cable, ment for teathering a camera, and it never fails can't same the same thing for one that plugs in with no cable.

Maybe, but the way he asked made it sound like not plugging into the camera was an inferior option.
