They sell pocket digital cameras for under $100.00 @ any photo shop. Once he gets older you can update the camera to a bridge camera.

If a kid is bit by the bug, and producing results, get her a decent but not over-the-top expensive model with a decent zoom.

I got my first box camera at five. By the time I was ten, I had four. At 13, I borrowed an SLR from a family friend, sold a lot of prints to my schoolmates' parents and the school publications, and bought my own. I was hooked for life.

Kids are sponges. They learn very rapidly and most will do as they're directed until they hit about 13. So the earlier she learns the controls and some things about making good images, the better!

My new favorite rock band started out VERY young (they got noticed on the Internet at 9, 11, and 14 after playing quite seriously for two years). At 19, 22, and 24, they've released three albums, and toured much of the Western World. They release a new single tomorrow, a new album later this year, and will tour Europe, too.

So my point is, if the kid's serious, give her the support she needs. You never know where it will go.

He should be able to determine which camera is best for him. This girl who is 9 year old is very successful but it doesn't mean the same cameras can do him well.
