Yeah, no more eating out for me. A few months ago, my son and I had lasagna at a restaurant - $70. I buy Stauffer's frozen lasagna for $15, and we get three nights out of it. That works out to about $2.50 per meal vs $35 for someone to bring it to us.

Plus you control the commute, traffic, guests, music, temps, quantities, beverages, seconds, etc. . . . . buurrrrppp, excuse me.

9.00 dollars and change for 2 large fries at McDonald’s and people are still buying

Remember the $0.19 hamburger at drive-ins? There was a Wetsons near me on Long Island in the early 1960. It was a very popular car hangout - with cheap food.

Food prices are ridiculous. I grabbed a sandwich the other day on the road and went to grab a bag of chips which were mostly air and the price said $2.49 ...I put them back
Actually, inflation is rather low.

The current U.S. inflation rate is 3.4% for the 12-month period leading up to December 2023. The rate of inflation was up 0.3% in December from the previous month, according to the latest release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics

[i]Inflation closed out 2022 with a 6.5% annual reading, as measured by the consumer price index, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Thursday. It was in line with economists’ expectations.[/]

I think a lot of the price increases, especially at restaurants, are the result of the bandwagon effect. "If the place down the road is charging $20 for a meal, why should we charge $15?"
Totally agree! I think this practice has spilled over to just about all businesses whether they need the increases or not.

We stopped eating hamburgers out 35 years ago. Our local super market has fresh ground chuck for $2.99 lb on Tue. No pre packaged meat, all fresh at the “old fashioned” meat counter. I cook most nights. Cooking is easy!! I sauté onions too. 😀

In 1967 a journeyman pipefitter made $5.00 per hour (as an apprentice I made $2.50 per hour). When I retired in 2017, they were making $82.50 per hour with benefits.

Amen.

Not to (grab) the glory of anyone that submits themselves to working at a drive-thru or even a sit-down restaurant, but those "eateries" only exist because people are always on the run and don't desire to sit down in their own homes for a (gathering) with family or friends.
As a result, our eating habits, and (our health) have suffered because of our need to hurry up, and get to the next appointment, or engagement. [Not to mention, eating foods made by another human being, is expensive, to say the least.]

My earliest recollections of a family trip were for my Dad to make sure the car was filled with gas, the interiors clean and safe, and Mom made up a small lunch and drinks for all 5 of us for a 2 hour trip to see relatives.

It would seem that if someone were (making a plan) to be away during a dinner hour, that they would, also make sure the plan included for the feeding their stomachs?

Feeding our bodies (and our families), isn't just a mindless thought, but a requirement made by a person that knows the needs of their bodily functions. Eating should be a joy. Plan on eating with family. (It's an easy plan).

My ten cents worth, (and keep the change).

....and that doesn't include a generous tip for service.

In 1960, after completing college and 2 yrs. of military service, I made $3300 a year as a teacher in NJ. During weekends and summer I worked at a local deli for $.80 an hour.

If one can afford to travel and vacation in Iceland, the cost of lunch and dinner is probably not an issue. I might be wrong. I can't afford to travel there, Besides, It's far too cold for my old body.

Eating out today costs a LOT of money as opposed to years prior. We treat ourselves occasionally but we pay dearly for it. Last evening, we went to Outback. I had a large draft beer, salmon with 2 sides that came with it. Instead of splitting with me as she sometimes does, my wife had lobster and whatever sides came with it and with tip, the bill was over $100. Yikes, didn't used to cost that much. If my wife had split with me, it still probably would be over $50. You could say that if I did not have the draft beer, that would cut the cost a lot but the beer only accounted for $8. My wife had water. I think the expenses have gone up for the restaurants too. I live in California so the minimum wage is fairly high plus they have the cost of lots and lots of insurance they have to pay. Oh well, not complaining, just agreeing with you that it is now pretty expensive resulting in less trips out for meals.

I don't eat out as often as I used to, but last night my son and I went to a new local eatery. We each got a cheeseburger with onion rings. I wanted fries, but I wound up with onion rings. The $8.00 hamburger for each of us produced a bill totaling $28.62. This is one reason why I don't eat out very often. Apparently, the $8.00 covered only the hamburger. The list of things below it all included an extra charge, unbeknownst to me. I don't know if paying by CC added to the bill because I didn't get a receipt. I'll continue to eat at home.
