I don't eat out as often as I used to, but last night my son and I went to a new local eatery. We each got a cheeseburger with onion rings. I wanted fries, but I wound up with onion rings. The $8.00 hamburger for each of us produced a bill totaling $28.62. This is one reason why I don't eat out very often. Apparently, the $8.00 covered only the hamburger. The list of things below it all included an extra charge, unbeknownst to me. I don't know if paying by CC added to the bill because I didn't get a receipt. I'll continue to eat at home.

Wow. inexpensive?

One special place near us where we get two burgers, fries, cup of a fantastic soup, and two cheesecake deserts was about $60.

Yeah, no more eating out for me. A few months ago, my son and I had lasagna at a restaurant - $70. I buy Stauffer's frozen lasagna for $15, and we get three nights out of it. That works out to about $2.50 per meal vs $35 for someone to bring it to us.

Sometimes one needs to treat one's self.
We always do Take-out Thursday.

So true. Eating out has been one of the things especially hit with inflation. Those prices are not likely to go down even if food prices go down. The overhead of building, equipment and wages will continue to rise.

Ten years ago? Lunch in a restaurant usually averaged $15 for the two of us. We joked about that then, always about $15 no matter where we went.
Now I think we're pushing $30.

We agree - however, our treat to ourselves is a special cut of steak, fish, or dessert to make at home every once in awhile.

We may eat out on occasions where we're going out to listen to a favorite group who is playing. We tip the band and have appetizers and drink. It's very enjoyable and way cheaper and better than going to a music venue. We're very fortunate to have a selection of music and cuisine just about every night of the week and even more so when the outdoor marinas are in full swing. Life is what you make it.

We recently bought a two pack of Kirkland sausage and beef lasagna at Costco. Each one could serve a family of four. The whole thing cost $17.00. A loaf of supermarket garlic bread (baked on-site) and salad fixings cost another seven dollars for a total of $24.00 for an entire meal for four. A single serving of lasagna at our favorite Italian restaurant was $11.00 (with rolls). A side salad is an additional $5.00. So a meal for our would have been $64.00 plus tax (7.25%) and a tip (20%). That would bring our $24.00 home-cooked meal to nearly $80.00 at the restaurant. When you add some drinks (~$4.00 each) That meal is nearly $100.00, four time the price of eating at home. And we still had another lasagna left. The next time we eat lasagna at home it will be under ten dollars.

Jerry, my growing annoyance is over the price of drinks. One restaurant we used to favor has iced tea at $3.99. For two adults and a teen (normal for us) that's close to 12 bucks for drinks alone. We've taken to getting water lately...

2 chopped bbq sandwiches, 2 orders of fries. A tea & one water; under $12 at our favorite bbq place.

Back in the 1970s, my wife's boss said he like to find a restaurant where they could get a meal for a dollar, and that wasn't an outrageous statement. I would occasionally go to a restaurant a few miles away and order the turkey dinner. Although it was very expensive ($2.75), it was delicious. When I was dating my wife, I brought her to a beautiful, fancy restaurant. When I looked at the menu, I was shocked. One of the cheapest things was a dinner for two for $15! Yes, it was very expensive, but I was trying to impress my girl.

I just went to the supermarket and got pork chops, chicken, grapes, sweet potatoes, and three ice creams for $29, close to what I paid last night for two hamburgers.

I believe, in general, many of the younger generation have no interest in budget shopping or cooking. They make up the demand for fast food and restaurants. Admittedly, whenever we do go out, the places are packed so obviously we're not the norm
