Before we push this thread into the Attic, the use of guns has really nothing to do with this.

I wonder how much of this can be in response to the guns used against them are so powerful that DNA becomes the only form of identification. Isn't that the purpose of "dog tags"?

It is a common internet rumor that the AR-15 makes people unrecognizable. Almost never happens. I fired its military equivalent (M-16) many times in the army.

Soldiers need dog tags because if killed or incapacitated they may be found by someone who never met them before. Plus those dog tags have information like religion and, if I remember correctly, blood type.

Another use of dog tags in the Vietnam war, never went there but fellow soldiers told me that in one area where they worked with the Montagnards they better wear their dog tags all the time, especially at night in foxholes. And if they felt someone feeling their necks, freeze. Those people were great at night operations and would sneak up to a fox hole and feel for the dog tag chain. No chain they assumed the soldier was an enemy and cut his throat.

One local high school will be requiring all students to wear ID tags around their necks while on school property. I wonder how that is going to work.

Another high school is requiring photo ID and a wearable ID tag for all visitors, and registered sex offenders will not be allowed into the school. I wonder if that is a change in policy. šŸ˜‚

In the schools I worked at, all students were required to carry their school ID card at all times. Don't have it, detention and each offense after that it got doubled. Third time a parent had to come in for a conference. It didn't take long for them to get the message.

My 12 year old granddaughters classmates have photo ID's they wear around their necks.
Not sure about the 9 year old.
I'll have to ask her.

Almost no gun that might be involved in a school shooting is that powerful. They are almost always small, cheap, relatively low powered hand guns. To blow up a body, you need either very large or explosive projectiles. A very powerful handgun might burst a head open, a shotgun can also do that. TV and movies greatly exaggerate the power of handguns, bodies do not fly backwards, they fall forward, backward, sideways or just go limp and drop straight down if it is an "instant" kill.

And yet, you never hear of "hand guns." It is always AR- or AK- type weapons --weapons of war. And reports of necessary DNA ID testing is quite common in what are now a "mass shooting" every day. What does your research say about the type of bullets used?

Just sayin.

In our day, there were rules and you abided by them.

I remember breaking at least as many rules as my kids did. But I never told them until they were adults!

In many cases, breaking rules is how you learn NOT to break the rules... by experiencing what happens when you do.

Fortunately, I never got hurt. Many others did.

Iā€™m not really fond of having something hung around someoneā€™s neck. It could be a choking hazard. Perhaps, attached to a personā€™s clothing by a clip at shirt pocket level is better.

Gee. Does this sound to rigid and authoritarian? Yes! Perhaps if we went to the ā€œolderā€ ways, there may be less wringing our hands and less articles in the newspapers.

BSā€¦military rifles have this thing called full auto, and also this thing called 3 shot burstsā€¦neither of which your off the shelf civilian version has. Those versionsā€¦just like civilian versions of the HMMVā€¦are significantly different than their military counterpartsā€¦and they were largely designed to look like military weapons to attract young male buyers more than anything else. Scary looking means you can look like a bad ass at the range.

Unfortunatelyā€¦the left hates guns but because they donā€™t have enough support to change the constitution they nibble around the edges in a long running effort to legislate the amendment out of existence. And folks on the right do the same things to rights they donā€™t like.

Meā€¦as a retired military personā€¦I took the oath to support and defendā€¦and I believe in all the rights in the constitutionā€¦but unfortunately that today is somewhat of a minority position.

I do not argue with anyone. I rather drink a shot of whiskey, smoke a good cigar and discuss what we both think. I hope to better understand someone elseā€™s point of view.

When I was going to school I never had an ID card photo or otherwise.

As far as hanging something around the neck use a breakaway lanyard, it will come off with the slightest tug and not wrap around the neck or get pulled so that it becomes a chocking hazard.

At work I am required to wear a photo ID. It must be worn on outer clothing between the waist and shoulder a visible to everyone. If working around moving machinery it may be tucked in a shirt pocket or inside the shirt, once the work is accomplished it must become visible again. It must be secured in a manner that if it becomes entangled it is easily broken from the wearers body. I wear a leather one that attaches to a button on my shirt in the center of my chest.

Understandable at work. I have worked as a pharmacist at Bellevue Hospital for 23 years. I have complied with this policy. I think that given the circumstances, an ID card with a bar code would facilitate a studentā€™s movement. Does it sound like Orwellian 1984? Yes but as a parent if offers peace of mind. PS: My daughter and son are teachers and they donā€™t mind the ID card.
