Our main reason for extending our "Eastern Alps Drive" down into Croatia was to revisit the Plitvice Lakes National Park. We explored this park for the first time in 1990 when we just passed through as a day-visitor. We subsequently felt that we needed more time in this magnificent park. It took us 33 years, but we finally made it again, this time staying overnight at one of the few hotels right in the park, which allowed us the proper time to do a number of the hikes along the lakes and waterways, mainly on footpaths and at times on raised boardwalks. We could and probably should have spent much more time here. It truly is a magical setting and I hope that you will enjoy the few images I present below. I will have a couple of more photos in the next set, when I combine 3 widely dispersed areas of Croatia, Slovenia and Austria into one post.

PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK - Excerpt of the opening statement of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention: "Croatia's largest national park covering almost 30,000 hectares (300 km² / 75,000 acres), is situated in the central part of the country. Within a beautiful karst landscape dominated by a mix of forests and meadows, the magnificent Plitvice lake system stands out, fascinating scientists and visitors alike. Interconnected by many waterfalls and watercourses above and below ground, the lakes are grouped into the upper and lower lakes."

Thanks Dennis. Yes, this Plitvice Lakes NP and the Dolomites get the WOW factor from us as strong highlights of our 2023 European trips, even though the remainder are quite worthy as well.

Thanks Ken, yes, it was a good walk, a good distance but really quite flat (only in photography are some lakes quite tilted ....) and we actually even had a small lake crossing on a boat, those pictures didn't make it into this advanced selection though.
