Don't forget the sales tax savings.

Selling to friends or family can be problematic. Suppose the lens develops a problem right after you buy it. Suppose you see one for sale for $200 less after you buy it? Suppose he realizes he could have gotten $200 more.
Many years ago, we sold my parents' VW camper to my wife's boss. Every time he had a complaint about it, he made sure to tell my wife. Even giving something away can cause relationship problems.
Of course, if you decline, and you buy it from another source, that will cause problems. Your only solution is to move far away and never contact him again. 😂

Gee Jerry, I didn't know you were such an optimist. It's a negotiation isn't it? He offers his friend a price and his buddy can say yes or up HIS price,
I wonder if the friend who wants to sell the item is being kept up to date.

IMHO, I think you should do what you think is fair, instead of asking for opinions from a bunch of random guys on the internet.
Random guys?! Random guys?! We are members of The Ugly Hedgehog! Experts on everything! 🤣
Actually, it's nice to get a variety of opinions before making a decision. I often ask friends and relatives for their opinions, and then I make a decision.

Yes, in an ideal world.
I've broken my own rule and sold several items to friends - at reduced prices. I wanted to get rid of the items, and I didn't want to "make a killing" selling them. Fortunately, there were no complaints after the sales. If there were, I would have bought them back at the price they paid.
Hey all --
Follow up -- I'm buying the lens. Friend said if there's a problem we can undo the deal.
All is good.
It was an easy negotiation, I told him the B&H Price offer price, he said that would be good, and I said I'd give him $100 more. So, assuming that B&H would have haircut it a little -- $150 or so over what he would get if he sold it.
But basically, it was an upside-down negotiation (Buyer offering more and seller asking less), but neither of us wanted to take advantage of the other.
Ken
I typed this up as you apparently made the purchase...so deleting my comments.
Enjoy.
