Fair Price Among Friends -- Question

Want to know what others think.

A friend wants to sell one of his lenses (Nikon Z 14-24 f/2.8). He's pretty much told me that he'll take whatever I offer.
My thought here -- he could easily sell the lens used to MPB or B+H for $1000-1100. He could probably get more from ebay, but has told me he doesn't want the hassle of doing that.

I could buy the lens grey market new for about 1700. (But this is more than I can justify based on my needs)

I'm thinking -- split the two numbers (say $1350 or 1400), but will only do this if it's 'fair', and would just pass on the lens rather than offering something unfair.

If I was selling to a friend I would ask a bit less than what MPB or B&H offers me. And, yes, I would request that fair price and not dump the pricing decision onto my friend.

Offer him what he'd get from B&H or MPB. Your friend isn't looking to make money out of you and you don't want to take advantage of him.

If those are the circumstances, I would double check with B&H and if the number is still $1000-1100, I would have an honest conversation with him, show him the B&H numbers and say If you would be happy with this I'll bee happy to pay that amount. If he agrees you both get a good deal, You get a bargain because B&H will mark it up, and he will be saved the hassle of shipping boxing and waiting for a check.
Seems fair and quick

I agree with RG. Give your friend an offer like B&H's and tell him that IF he find that he can get more, please go for it.

Sales and trades between friends can be great, or they can be really complicated.

The first and most important thing to establish is whether the friend is more important or the lens is more important. Hopefully, this will mesh with your friend's assessment of whether the money is more important or you are more important. Once that is acknowledged, then it would seem that open and honest discussion based on all of the parameters that have been suggested here should yield agreement on a price that makes everyone happy and preserves the friendship.

Your thought of offering $1350-$1400 is more than fair.

Thanks for the input. To be honest, without going into details of the relationship -- here's what I'm going to do.

1. I'm going to show him the B+H Price (you can get that from the website at any time).
2. I'm going to show him the New Grey Market Price I've found.
3. I'm going to offer him B+H Price plus $200

Basically, I think offering somewhere in the middle of the two is the right thing to do in this case.

So it will be full disclosure. And he'll either accept it or not. Shouldn't impact on the relationship either way.

The B&H price for buying the lens will be more than they would offer him for it.

Why include grey market? That isn't in the discussion at all is it? As others have said, offer him what B&H would offer. That is fair to both of you.

You didn't say anywhere i the discussion that you want or would use the lens. $1400 is alot of cash for smething you really don't want or need.

I wonder if he would have started the conversation if he had not wanted the lens. Just a thought.

1) Your friend sounds like he really wants to sell the lens.
2) it sounds like he doesn’t want to have to mess with having to post it on eBay or other sites and would rather sell it quickly by offering it to you, a friend.
3) You don’t actually say that you need the lens or you would be doing your friend a favor by being a nice guy.
4) The B&H trade in value sounds fair enough based on 1,2 and 3. I’m sure your friend will not be offended by your offer.
5) If so, give him a couple more Franklins.
6) Everyone is happy 😃

B+H and KEH give a guarantee with their purchases. Take that into account.
