I am currently deciding on a 70-200mm lens to use with my new Nikon D850. I’ve watched many YouTube reviews on the Tamron f 2.8 G2 and the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS (HSM) Sport. My budget is more in the price range of these two lenses. I’m not opposed to used lenses that are rated like new or excellent. In that case any suggestions for reputable companies to buy from would be appreciated. I would like to know what opinions members of this group have. Thanks in advance.

Look, you have one of, if not the best DSLR ever produced. Please do not muddy the waters with a Tamron or Sigma.
There are many lightly used Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR II or the latest Nikon 70-200 2.8 E FL ED VR, this latest lens is going for a song used because many users have moved to Z bodies and also Z lenses.
So you may find a great deal out there on eBay. These two were that last in a long line of superior 70-200 Nikon glass.
Please do not sell your D850 short, get a lens that was designed specifically for your camera, not one that is designed for MANY different bodies. The E FL ED VR was the sharpest lens I ever used on my D850.

Golfstitch since you're shooting a new Nikon D850 a 70-200mm f/2.8 is a wonderful piece of kit for a D850... and VR is to be cherished if you're shooting handheld. Albeit it's useless for subject motion associated with Action/Sports so you'll still need to reliably shoot at or above 1/2000 especially at 200mm.

Such a deal mpb currently has for someone fixated on "Like New" kit.
A fabulous Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR Nikkor Like New in it's original Box! Price $794
Comes with everything that a new one shipped with...

mpb offers a 14 day No hassle returns which btw I have used successfully so it is very real. They refunded the full price with zero questions asked. As such I've purchased other stellar pieces of Kit from mpb, they are also one of the only vendors of Used Kit that posts Shutter Counts on their Nikon bodies... and those are spot on, (I checked).

What is the down side with this amazingly low price Like New in Box Nikkor? It is the first generation of Nikon's 70-200mm f/2.8G as such DxOmark ranked it just a tad below the newer generations because of soft corners at 200mm wide open. However as a Sports Shooter I have no need for edge to edge sharpness at 200mmm and stopped down below 170mm those edges are totally fine. Besides this first edition has some stellar features that the newer generations don't have (such as Three AF-Lock Buttons! which are Awesome for shooting sports!)

You can read Uncle Ken's take on this stellar lens here

Look carefully on this one, I believe it might be the older model but it’s possible I am wrong. I had this lens and subsequent newer models perform better. If you go Tamron make sure to get the G2 and you might want the dock that is available.

I use the D850 and have the Tamron 70-200 and love the combination. It is my go to lens for outdoor sports, indoor sports, around the yard bird photography. I don't juse it a lot indoors, but when I do it is during the day and I have had really good results. I use JPG, autoISO, and usually use manual. The results of this combination are really sharp and crisp.

I have a 500 mm prime for more distant outdoor shots as the 200mm just doesn't reach far enough

My experience is the same with my D850 and 70-200mm F/2.8 G2. When researching, I found that the G2 was rated higher than the Nikon version, so for the differential in price, the decision was a no brainer. Based on my experience with the Tamron 70-200mm G2, I bought the Tamron 24-70mm G2. Both G2s has served me well over the years. These two G2s were my go to glass on my Z9 until I was able to afford the Nikon Z versions.

I use the Nikon 70-200 f4 f mount lens on my D850. You can buy this lens used as Nikon no longer makes it. It is much lighter and costs a lot less than f2.8 versions made by Nikon. And maybe others too. I got the f 4 version when the AF motor died on my f2.8 version. I have seen it for sale at around $350.

If you think you might need more reach, check out the 70-300mm lend from Nikon.

The Nikon 70-200 E 2.8 is one of the best lenses Nikon has made. As good as Tamron and Sigma are now, get the Nikon. It is my favorite lens. Fast focus and sharp edge to edge. Great for portraits, landscapes, architectural detail, sports, the zoo, botanical gardens, urban settings, etc. I bought the converter when I moved to the Z8 so that I could continue to use it. It has a solid build so I would not hesitate to buy it used.

If you look at Golfstitch's Profile, you will see they have NEVER used "Quote Reply". Ever.

I'm putting Golfstitch in the Rude and Uncaring round file now.
