Look for best deal as usual but as far as the Tamron 70-200 G2 it's an excellent lens. I had both the Nikon 70-200 2.8 and this at the same time. I could not see any difference in speed or image quality. Good luck

Never shot Sigma so don't know about toughness. These days, especially in the used market there may be little difference in price between Tamron and Nikon. If that's the case I'd by Nikon.

That said I have a Tamron 70-200 f2.8. It's been married to my 850 almost exclusively for 2-3 years. I shoot news so it's been banged around and in some not so nice conditions and hasn't missed a beat. The lens shade is cracked from an impact and taped up with gaffer tape and still making photos. I believe if you need a 70-200 2.8 you'd likely do well with any of the three. I can only speak to Tamron and have no regrets.

My expwrience is very different from yours. I shoot sports for a newspaper. I also beat my lenaes up. I started with a Tamaron 70-200 and it vroke in less than two years. It was reppaced under warranty and that one also broke.

Replaced it with a Sigma even though it was still under warranty because I didnt want to deal with it anymore. The Sigma worked fine for 5 years before I saved enough to buy a Nikon. The Sigma still works I just dont use it.

I know there are people that swear by Tamaron but in both of mine the focusing motor went out.

I am currently deciding on a 70-200mm lens to use with my new Nikon D850. I’ve watched many YouTube reviews on the Tamron f 2.8 G2 and the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS (HSM) Sport. My budget is more in the price range of these two lenses. I’m not opposed to used lenses that are rated like new or excellent. In that case any suggestions for reputable companies to buy from would be appreciated. I would like to know what opinions members of this group have. Thanks in advance.

KEH.com (Atlanta, GA, based)
MPB.com (Brooklyn, NY, Brighton, UK, and Berlin, Germany)
UsedPhotoPro.com (Roberts Camera, Indianapolis, IN)
BHPhotoVideo.com (NYC)
Adorama.com (NYC)

All of these are reputable used dealers. B&H and Adorama are two HUGE NYC retailers of new and used gear. I have had good service from all five of these companies.

Stay away from Abe's of Maine and 42nd St. Photo. They are shady retailers known here as rip-off pros.

As for Tamron vs. Sigma, they both make good gear with excellent glass. Their lenses are available in a variety of mounts.

Sigma is one of the three charter members of the L-Mount Alliance. The other two are Leica and Panasonic Lumix. But Sigma makes lenses for Canon, Nikon, and Sony mounts (none for Canon mirrorless 'R' mount)

Tamron is known for their six year warranty on new lenses. (SAVE your original receipt and completed warranty card. Otherwise, the warranty is useless.) Tamron makes lenses for leading manufacturers (none for Canon mirrorless 'R' mount).

I appreciate all the info. I did purchase a lens from KEH and I’m very happy with it.

The Nikkor 70-200 f 2.8 works very well only D850.

I currently have a Sigma 105mm for macro, Nikon 14-24 f2.8, a Tamron 24-70 f2.8. I do shoot indoor sport (high school wrestling) and outdoor soccer and pole vaulting. I also have a Sigma 150-600 f5-6.3. I find the Sigma 150-600 heavy for shooting handheld. I primarily use it on a tripod for bird and wildlife photography. I’m thinking the 70-200 would round out the lenses I would typically use for sports.

For your intended use, and if you can live with f5.6 - which you probably can using a D850, I think you should be considering a 70-300 - the latest full frame Nikon is what I would recommend. I think the longer reach may be more important/satisfying than faster f-stops.

If speed isn't critical another fine choice is the Nikon 70-200 f4. Available used fairly reasonably these days.

The Nikon 70-200 f/4 is every bit as sharp as it’s f/2.8 brethren, at half the size, cost and weight. 👍

I would recommend Adorama, MPB, KEH, or, perhaps, Robert’s Camera. Sometimes these companies will run promotions or offer discounts and/or extended warranties.

If you lived in the greater Youngstown, Ohio, I would highly recommend you contact Robby Yankush at YM Camera. You might even call him.

My 70-300 was put in its case and has not seen the light of day since shortly after buying the D850. It is OK for the camera. For a D500, 650, or 700 it will work well, very well. I should give it to my son. I forgot about it.

Which version of the 70-300 are referring to? The latest version is pretty good. Even at the 300mm length.

I got a used 70-200 2.8 AF-S VR of 2003 vintage, on KEH in EX+ condition for about $850. I use it on my Z6ii/Z7ii with great results, but it is a heavy lens with IF/zooming so the length is constant too. It was one of the last NIKKOR lenses to be made in Japan (with a brass plate on the barrel). This is the exact lens - https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product-archive/camera-lenses/af-s-vr-zoom-nikkor-70-200mm-f%252f2.8g-if-ed.html

Yes, I worked with them when they were Youngstown Microfilm, they processed our football games after Friday or Saturday night football, we would get the films back on Sunday afternoon so coaches could huddle together and watch them. Video equipment surly dried up the market for filming.
