Interesting. They had a number of TR3 bodies left when they discontinued the TR3 engines, and they put the TR4 engine in those and titled them as TR3Bs. Was yours one of those, or did you do the swap yourself?

Previous owner did the swap and sunk a lot into the engine build, but it never ran up to its potential. He got frustrated and sold it for a loss. The next day I discovered that the gas pedal linkage was hitting the firewall. Easy fix and from then on it ran like a stripped-azz ape! Cars were fun then.

Cool. Had two Bug Eyes (the Brits call them “Frog Eyes”) and an MGA with a B engine.

Indeed! I had a TR4 and was getting ready to buy a shiny new TR6 when I discovered a BMW dealership nearby and bought a 2002 instead - my first new car.

It's too bad they weren't as dependable as they were beautiful

Except for their Sport Coil. I put on on my '67 Datsun 1600, and I think that engine could start underwater!

Well, SUs can be a pain - we always ran a little lighter oil in the dampers for the race cars to speed up throttle response. Over the years, I’ve tuned SUs, Solexes, Strombergs and Zeniths, but I LOVE Webers, especially DCOEs. You can remove the top wing nut and instantly change mains, air corrections, idle, accelerator pump and emulsion tubes. BTW, I still have a UniSyn, but I gave my assortment box of Weber jets away a LONG time ago.

What tracks did you race at?

It was VIR and Road Atlanta for me. Also used to be a cool short track in Marlboro MD, but closed now.

Can't remember. I went to European Automotive to order a magneto and the counterman STRONGLY suggested the Lucas Sports Coil, it was only about $15.00 and a simple swap-out. Spark plug wires burnt out yearly and my neighbors said my car messed-up their television reception. When they complained I knew new wires were due. Today it would be: CHECK ENGINE! $1,200!
