This reminds me of the McLaren, one of the safest sports cars on the road, if you're going to crash out.

Not exactly a birdcage. When the Tipo 60 and 61 were racing there were still discussions between F-1 drivers whether it was safer to wear seat belts and stay with the car or be thrown free of the car in the event of a serious crash

Masten Gregory drove one for awhile. He's mostly forgotten now, but was one heck of a racer from the '50's until the early '70's.

I saw one of these in a race at small upstate NY track a Looong time ago. What I truly remember while standing on the sidelines of a straight section, was the physical pounding I felt on my chest from the thunderous pulsating exhaust! What a beautiful machine!
