What model NVidia card with how much VRAM? And is the disk SSD or a spinning HD? if you need to replace it, must you have a laptop, or can you go with a new desktop for photo editing?

I had (still do) a Dell XPS 8300 and I changed the HD to SSD, put 32 GB RAM and it improved the performance. Its still a good PC and we bought it in 2011. Not one issue. However, once I moved up to the D850 and Z9 I needed more horsepower to move files and post process in reasonable time I found it especially necessary when processing stacked images. I bought an IBuyPower Desktop (water cooked) at Costco about 3 years ago and it has been a champ. 64 GB RAM, SSD for OS and apps, a 2TB HDD for storage, Invidia RTX 4060 graphics card with 8GB, 1500 Watt power supply and more. I got it on sale through Costco online $1300. Last eve I did a 40 stack shoot in RAW and had 3 different images stacked and converted to TIFF 16 bit in about 3 mins. (A min oer photo$) and the did final tweeks in PhotoshopEssential 7.0 and Nikon NX. Very happy with the price, speed, reliability and support. It is easily upgradable. I did lose a multicolor cooling fan but wss able to procure a quick replacement at Best Buy and swap it out. I owe the failure to the fact the machine runs 24/7/365.
I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately, many laptops have VERY limited [if any] upgrade capability.
You can look up memory expansion in the specifications for your laptop. Video os generally limited to what is already installed.

I'm having issues in LrC processing files particularly with the Denoise AI feature. I have a Sony a7rv 61mp camera. Current PC is a 16gb ram, 8th generation i7, and Nvidia GPU. So the question is what computer system do I need to upgrade to? It's been recommended by some to switch to an M3 Mac Pro such as a MRW23LL/A but I'd like to stick with a pc format. Just looking for more feedback as I'm trying to manage the expense.
TIA.

Here are a lot of links. You don't have to mortgage you house to afford a computer that can process images.

I believe your PC is a desktop. So, upgrade to 32 GB RAM change SATA SSD to M2 NVme SSD.

If you are using windows pc, the likely upgrade needed is a new video GPU card with more RAM than the GPU you now have. The next upgrade would be to upgrade the RAM on the motherboard from 16 to 32 or 64 GB. Check out Puget Systems to see what they are saying about GPU cards these days.

On my laptop, it was running everything in the power saving mode (by default) and not using the Nvidia GPU. I tried NVIDIA settings and it told me to use Windows settings to select which software/apps used the upgraded/faster graphics capability. Windows settings has a list of software/apps to select but it also allows you to browse to other software if not on their list.

Don’t know if this will solve your problems, but it is a $0 thing to try before you spend some money… and it is something to do on any new hardware you may purchase.

I can’t remember the steps, but it is under graphics/display settings… can’t check my PCs… they are 900 miles away.

Great news - turn time on 250mb files (Tiff) from LRC to Topaz to LRC is 3 seconds. This includes batch from inside LRC (round tripping).

Solution - developed mainly from UHH contributors last January:

Motherboard: Asus ProArt Z790-Creator WiFi
Memory: 64 - DDR5 6000
GPU: RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition
Processor: i9 13th Generation (13900k)
Hard Drives: (2) Stata SSD
Power Supply: 1350
Monitor: (2) BenQ SW270C

Bad news - desk top weighing 62lbs with 13 fans plus liquid cooling. Cost (remember 2 BenQ 27" monitors) $6,200 about 9 months ago.

I use my Surface Pro to teach LRC. In the big leagues, you cannot use a portable to process at an elevated level with speed. As others have already pointed out, the GPU is key now and then CPU.

Hope this helps, Cliff

For a laptop check out some of the models made by Lenovo. I have a ThinkPad extreme 1 with 32 GB RAM and it has a dedicated video GPU card.

Another aspect to cause slow processing is if your hard drive is almost full. If that is the case then the processor keeps swapping out memory and can really slow things down.

AI applications need multiple fast core processors. Even the fastest machines need a long time to handle AI software. Check out “Art is Right” on YouTube to see Mac comparisons.

With those specs u shouldn't be having problems.

What size of hard drives or SSDs do you have for C: and D: drives? You might be running too many programs that are memory hogs in the DRAM section. If your C: drive is getting full, you can transfer the Downloads, Documents, Pictures, and where you software installers are stored, over to the D: drive.

If you or a trusted friend knows about setting the size of the virtual drive that is used like RAM make sure that it is large enough and that your SSD or hard drive can handle the increase. As time goes by, the number of programs that start when the system reboots grows and uses more RAM. Look at the Task Manager and shut down any programs that you do not need to start whew you boot. Just some ideas. --Richard

That's a problem with my Big Red. The case is too big to fit into the slot in this computer desk, so I have to put it on top. Although it has no hard drives, it's still very heavy, and lifting it over four feet to the top of the desk is awkward.
