I don't know if you can find out the price that places like B&H and KEH would buy and the price they would sell. Split the difference between these 2 prices would the most fair.

A friend wants to sell one of his lenses (Nikon Z 14-24 f/2.8). He's pretty much told me that he'll take whatever I offer.
My thought here -- he could easily sell the lens used to MPB or B+H for $1000-1100. He could probably get more from ebay, but has told me he doesn't want the hassle of doing that.

I could buy the lens grey market new for about 1700. (But this is more than I can justify based on my needs)

I'm thinking -- split the two numbers (say $1350 or 1400), but will only do this if it's 'fair', and would just pass on the lens rather than offering something unfair.

Look up your item in Ebay, see what it has actually SOLD for. Then, I take that average and usually add a couple of bucks to it.
You item is ony worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Why include grey market? That isn't in the discussion at all is it? As others have said, offer him what B&H would offer. That is fair to both of you.

I agree. Why offer him MORE than he could possibly get by selling it on line??? Take a look and see what the camera shops are selling it for used. and then take a little money OFF! Hell you don't even have to hassle about freight!

Remember, the sellers of the SOLD items actually received 13.5% less from eBay. Plus, you are not paying sales tax either.

I too agree with RG. Don’t risk the possibility of losing a friendship with a low-ball offer.

Selling to friends or family can be problematic. Suppose the lens develops a problem right after you buy it. Suppose you see one for sale for $200 less after you buy it? Suppose he realizes he could have gotten $200 more.

Many years ago, we sold my parents' VW camper to my wife's boss. Every time he had a complaint about it, he made sure to tell my wife. Even giving something away can cause relationship problems.

Of course, if you decline, and you buy it from another source, that will cause problems. Your only solution is to move far away and never contact him again. 😂

I don’t get why you’re bringing the grey market price into play. Go with the B&H scenario. It’s a fair price for you to pay and he’ll get more than B&H would pay him.

I don't know, either, but gray market has no real warranty. There is also no warranty for the used gear. Still, used should be cheaper than gray.

I haven't looked at all the replies, but an option, only if you are up for it, is to borrow control of the items and sell them to B&H and wherever else. You manage all of that, and return all or most of the $ back to him. You should agree in advance about the details.

IMHO, I think you should do what you think is fair, instead of asking for opinions from a bunch of random guys on the internet.

I can understand your hesitation. For example, if a Hogger that I know would like to sell a Canon R3 with two lenses for $1500 would I buy it. Probably not! I might kick myself for years but I would lose a good friend! As appealing as the offer is, the body ($5K) alone is too tempting not to wonder why a friend (Hogger) is doing that. I can’t part with a good friend. Perhaps I am not good at business. But I am a good friend and that means more to me.
I would call my friend and we would go out to dinner, smoke some cigars and discuss the sale. But that is me and I don’t mind if someone were to call me foolish or worse.

This is a good approach. After all I am just a photographer lost behind a keyboard.

If those are the circumstances, I would double check with B&H and if the number is still $1000-1100, I would have an honest conversation with him, show him the B&H numbers and say If you would be happy with this I'll bee happy to pay that amount. If he agrees you both get a good deal, You get a bargain because B&H will mark it up, and he will be saved the hassle of shipping boxing and waiting for a check.
Seems fair and quick

Yep. That’s the right thing to do.
Have fun with it

…ask to try out the lens for a couple of days before offering him a price…?
