I wonder if when I do the self check out line at Sam's, if the person who scans my ticket when I go through the door to leave, could possibly give me a small tip for checking myself out. It wouldn't have to be much.

I consider the price of the workshop to be the total amount expected. I have never tipped for a workshop and I have never seen it as a suggestion. The tipping has gotton out of control!
I fully agree. It seems everyone wants tips these days. The coffee shop counter to the actual waitress, which I don't mind tipping for good service.
Tips jar anywhere is fine by me. What I think that are bs are:
1. Mandatory tipping. If it's mandatory they should simply increase the price.
2. Share the tips to other people in their organization. The tips should be only for the person that the clients want to tip. It shoud not be share with others regardless how hard the others worked. The tips should reflect the how the clients feel about the person they tips. For example in a restaurant the busboy may have to work very hard to serve you but you don't feel like tipping them but rather like to tip the waiter then the tip should only go to the waiter.

I agree, a small 10% of my bill contribution seems reasonable. But we will more likely see a tip jar at the door for their "service".
The price should be in the cost that was advertised!
Americans seems to be one of the few countries in the world that have institutionalized tipping.

I guess because like to pretend.
Interesting discussion
My general rule -- If the person giving the tour/workshop is the owner of the Company I usually don't tip the owner, but if here's a driver or assistant involved, I tip them. Otherwise, I usually ask about this when I book the tour, and add it into the cost of the trip. I agree that people should be paid a full wage for the work -- but simply put, many aren't.
My pet peeve, is a situation where a gratuity is added to the invoice (i.e., cruise lines) and there are major discussions as to whether an additional tip is expected. My general rule is that unless I've received exceptional service, I shouldn't tip twice.
