Good guidelines, but nowadays everyone expects a tip - even the cashiers!

I am planning a trip to Africa for the Great Migration, Serengeti. I have been to game preserves in South Africa. Where did you go?
What company did you use - if you don't mind me asking?

In reading I see reference to workshops. Do you apply the same concepts to photo trips?

Real Nikon Lover...

You said: The drink packages used to be inclusive now they are stifling....

You are "correct" to a great degree, but in history, alcoholic drinks, as a general rule, have usually been a 'paid-for item'....... I am currently 77 and cruised since I was 15 YOA...

Me, Personally, I have "no problem" with an add-on TIP for something 'delivered' to me by a server...

What I have a problem with is the fact the cruise company adds $ 16/day per person, for each and every guest... as a "NON-Specific" dollar amount to your room charge and labels it "Crew Appreciation" with absolutely NO details as to WHO the Crew is... What the amount to each Crew is... and if.. In Fact, the crew actually gets the dollar amount.....

We, my wife and I, just did a 67-day cruise in the Baltic, and around into the Mediterranean Sea... Our Total dollar amount for "Crew Appreciation" was going to be about $2,150 bucks... and then... You felt 'guilty' if you did not leave a 'little something extra' for certain employees...... Just saying...

Sooooo, As a long-time cruiser on this specific company, I went to the front desk, and told them to 'take the charges off...' I told the staff, and wrote on my 'waiver form'.. that I was going to "handle crew appreciation' on a case-by-case basis' and I would pick and choose to whom I gave my money to, and I would choose how much I would give them......

That "Worked" and the staff never disagreed with me... They just had me 'sign the waiver' form.

In fact... I explained to one of the staff members, "I have already paid for my cruise" and I have "No written and/or contractual obligation to pay anymore"...... "Crew Appreciation" was not in my 'purchased agreement'

We, my wife, and I have sailed over 500 nights in the last 7 years with this one company and, in fact, I actually own stock in this company...... and that is the way it works for us.

IMHO.

Cheers

You don't tip the instructor. If you have talent you should tip them because they are usually not paid.

Dave.......

You said: "Because they are usually not paid." .......

I would "guess" that is an assumption... and you know what that does...

Before you "Tip" on an assumption... Ask, and be knowledgable

Just saying

One of my favorite tips. Another is, Bet on Lucky Lady in the third race.

The custom of tipping comes from the word itself, TIPS (To Insure Prompt Service). It was used in the seting ofe food because people appreciated prompt service of food and drink. A meeting or a classroom that is scheduled for a set time does not have the option of being started more quickly so TIPS should not be a consideration. The same with appointments, classes, or anything else that is scheduled.

Sooooo much about this post I agree with especially most everybody these days has their hand out for tips.

While in Alaska this September past my companion and I took the cruise of Resurrection Bay and parts of Kenai Fjords Nat Pk, at the end of the cruise, as we were docking, the crew put out a tray for tips. We were bewildered and confused, we had hardly any interaction with the crew the entire cruise. The Kenai Fjords cruise cost us considerably more than taking the ferry from Valdez to Whittier via Prince William Sound; both cruises were about 6 hours in duration.

I have worked for a major outdoor retailer for more than a dozen years. I was tasked with giving fly casting instructions for any customer who wanted or asked for lessons; I was prohibited from accepting tips, it was considered a conflict of interest??? The going rate for fly casting lessons has been $75 per lesson for a long time. Add to that my employer never thanked me for giving lessons. I could have taken a decent vacation each year had I been allowed to charge for my services.

It seems more and more people are wanting tips these days. They should just charge what they need to.

Usually one must pay the fee well in advance. I’m not inclined to show up for the workshop with a lot of extra cash in my wallet, considering what I have already spent.

I hate it when people consider there should be tips. The best way to tip is to do it whenever you feel like it. Otherwise it should be listed as a fee if they want the money.

In Canada just deduct the GST and take 1/2. This will avoid getting the stink eye. It used to be that a tip was for extraordinary service /goods. Now in most cases it's a subsidy to the owners to top up the mega wages they pay their employees.
In New Zealand to tip is considered an insult. How refreshing.

It makes no sense. Traditionally you don't tip the owner and if the owner wants more money just raise the price. He has more expense so he raises the price it makes sense but to make you tip him makes no sense.
In Japan tip is also considered in insult. Sure prices of food in Japanese restaurants are high and portions are small but it's OK.

That's exactly the way it worked on my and my wife's last cruise. Except it was a lot more than $16 per day! We went to the customer service desk and told them to remove the "tip" charges, as we would do the tipping directly to the person that we thought had earned a tip. It wasn't a problem, no raised eyebrows from anybody.

So, your employer didn't "thank" you with a pay check at the end of the week??

If I were a workshop instructor I would be insulted if anyone offered a tip.
