When I click on the daily emailed link to the Digest, I get a page that says it is a "Filter by section:" and lists the sections to which I subscribe, with a number indicating the number of items live in that section. As I recall - a notoriously weak indicator, I admit - that's not much different from the old format.
I don't recall how/if I arranged for it to be presented that way, but that's how it's been since shortly after the new format came out.

I never used the digest, since it is only a selection of posts, not all of them.

If you depend on the digest you are going to see changes since the digest has changed. UHH has not changed outside the digest.
It is NOT necessary to view UHH through the digest. You can merely start at
https://uglyhedgehog.comIf you start there you will see a list of the sections you have subscribed to. If you have not subscribed to any sections explicitly, you will see the default list. At the bottom of the list is 'All Sections'. Clicking on that will give you the complete list of available sections. You can click on any of them and get the opportunity to subscribe. And you can unsubscribe from any of the default sections or any sections to which you are subscribed.
Clicking on one of the sections you are presented with will give you all the posts in that section, arranged by most recent posts within that thread. You have the choice of ALL the threads in that section, while if you use the digest you will only see selected threads within that section. The digest is just that. It's allowing an algorithm to show you what it wants you to see. Going directly to UHH and then to the section will show you everything.

At the bottom of each page there is an 'all sections' listed . Click on that and it brings up 'all the sections'.
One can simply mark each section you are interested in and when you select your 'home page', all the selected sections will come up for your perusal. Easy.

Is it possible Main Photography Discussion serves as a kind of "home page" for Admin, to simplify viewing/locating posts that are not in what Admin deems the most appropriate section? If new members, who have not explored to find their way around in the site, and longer-subscribed members, who are not certain where a post should go (or have not explored to find their way around the site), have put posts in Main that would be better elsewhere, maybe it gives Admin a "reception desk" area that is a quick way to route them to the "right room".
Two or three topics I've put up in the past were moved by Admin. There was no chiding nor rebuke connected with it.....just a concise, generic form statement that my posting was moved to another section. Didn't seem unfair. (Those topics were not necessarily moved out of "Main". Maybe one was, because I blew it BIG time and did not select the correct section in the drop down menu under "Create New Topic".)
Although the drop-down list lets you select the 'target' section for a new post, there's always the to potential to (a) forget to make the correct selection, or (b) to pick the wrong target subsection.
If you "know" your posting action is targeted for the Photo Gallery (or into any specific section), one can just first navigate into that subsection; and only then, "press" the <Create New Post> button.
And finally, the responsible UHH community member will recognize their error when reviewing their posted content. Here, that responsible, can-do, results-oriented community member could again take multiple corrective actions, such as (1) Use the <Report> button and ask ADMIN to move the post, or (2) open the post in <Edit> and delete all the erroneously placed content so just an <empty> post appears, something ADMIN can then delete. Action #2 could be followed by (3), creating a new post and placing the desired content into the appropriate section.
If still unsure of the purpose of the Photo Gallery, emphasis added to this screen-clip of the top of the FAQs in the Photo Gallery.

The rule for sharing photos in the Photo Gallery instead of Main Photography is in the Photo Gallery Rules, which doesn't do any good if people, especially newbies, think Main Photography is the place to post them.
Thats a pretty genius place for them**NOT**.

Admin works in mysterious ways.
I agree. I don't like the new format at all. Very confusing and I've lost a lit of interest in it!!

If creating a new topic about a photo, or photos, then posting it in Main Photography Discussion, (mistakenly, intentionally, or unknowingly) is / has been / or ever was a major earth-shaking catastrophe to Admin, it's unlikely Admin would have put up with the stress, sleeplessness and increased blood pressure for this long.
Likely, something would have done about it administratively long before now.

I don't think anyone is saying that Admin is losing sleep over this...

I just look at the posts in my feed, never noticing where they are posted.
The
post is what I want to see,
not to make sure it is in the proper category.

I agree....
....however it seems some members may be....or something close to it....
....and (maybe) implying Admin could be part of the problem for not showing equal upsetting concern.

Does that "label" you as 'unattentive' or a 'non-conformist' ?
🤔😋
