People talk about “non OEM” batteries. That way it’s not brand specific. Look that up, and you’ll get an earful.

Here is a good one for you... on the back of my official Canon battery LP-E17 that came with my r50 is supper tiny print at the bottom it says.... Wait for it....... MADE in CHINA.

And most people would want you to believe that products made in China sucks....

Canon OEM LP-E17 7.2v - 1040mAh - 7.5Wh

I have been using Powerextra batteries for several years and now use them in my R50 and have had no problems what so ever. So far they have lasted just as long as Canon's more expensive LP-E17 in the R50. So far the Powerextra batteries have works just fine, and have no doubts that they will keep on working as intended. Since I do have an original Canon LP-E17 that came with the R50, I will see how long they last compared to it before they fail and have to be replaced. I can tell you I have some Powerextra LP-E6N for my Canon 70D that were bought in 2020 and are still going strong.

I am sure there will be more then plenty of naysayers that will tell you to only use original Canon batteries.

Never heard of that battery.
Good to hear how good they are.
I have pure generic batteries my 10D and 7D and they still work.
The only difference is that the Canon battery that came with the 10D and 7D seem to hold a charge 2x to 3x longer all these years later.

I've had mixed results with non-branded batteries in my cameras. My old Sony A100 and A200 cameras must have read something in the battery, because they only worked with Sony branded batteries. The non-Sony branded batteries appeared to charge just fine, but the cameras wouldn't recognize them or turn on with them. My Canon T5i worked fine with non-Canon branded batteries and I used them for a number of years. My Canon T8i has only Canon branded batteries, so I can't make a statement one way or the other about the use of non-Canon branded batteries. The advantage of using only Canon branded batteries is that my T5i non-Canon branded batteries came with their own charger, so there is the advantage of only carrying one charger. YMMV.

It simply depends on the level of quality control involved.
The super cheap ones may have none.

Batteries, tripods, ballheads, etc. tell much of a person's appreciation for quality. Many people on this site are willing to spend lots of money for the big-named star of the show, and then hire street bums for their supporting cast.

If modern science can ever figure out why this happens maybe it could cure the common cold.

Appreciation, or requirement.....

I appreciate quality, but I don't require it in everything.
Watson, Lenmar, ... work just fine.
Same with my Vello battery grip, works GREAT!

Some cababilities are available only on top-tier bodies.

True.
But does everyone need or want them?
Or just certain individuals...

Oh, it does indeed!

I wonder if they also get OEM bulbs, filters, etc. for their cars, or <brand> paper for their printers, or ... .

I used Canon and non-Canon batteries in Canon APS-C cameras for many years when I shot with that system. The only battery that I had that went bad was a Canon OEM battery. But those were probably dumb batteries without a chip inside them. New batteries seem to have a chip in them, not sure if non-OEM batteries do also. Also, you might not be able to charge the non-Canon battery in camera.

Oh my, another discussion, much the same as RAW vs JPEG, or Nikon vs. Canon Vs. Fuji, that will only provide the OP with individual owner's opinions that are based upon what they own. Maybe try looking online to seek out some more professional reviews & tests that are not based upon the natural bias we all share... liking/recommending what we purchased.
