I just bought a set of en-el 15 by a company called Smallrig thru Amazon. About $36 for 2 batt and a USB charger. It has a built in usb- male plug or you can use a usb-c one. They are 2100 amphr and have the chip for Nikon cameras. My D850 would not take other 3rd parties. So far so good.

Needing a charger for a Sony a9 and a7III, I happened to be ordering a lot of other things from BH so I got my batteries in that order. BH sells that Smallrig brand and the dual slot charger is remarkable. Its fast and is very informative about the state of each battery.

Charger came with 2 batteries I didnt need, but they seem as good as my usual Wasabis. No error messages.

I always get confused when I see posts like this. The grip is an integral part of the Z8. You have already spent $3700 plus tax on a new Z8 but it seems you are willing to forego Nikon's high quality $346 grip for someone else's plastic version to save around $250 rather then getting the real thing. If you are broke and have no choice then maybe it makes sense.

I think that how he chooses to spend his money is his business and his alone. He asked for recommendations on equipment, not advice on how to spend his money>

Money and gear choices are all one question.

Just upgraded to a Nikon Z8. I thought I would be all set with 4 or 5 batteries, but batteries for my D700 give me an error. Does anyone have a recommendation for an aftermarket version that works well? I’m also looking for a vertical grip, the Nikon version is a bit much, anyone have a recommendation? Amazon has one from Bitubol, but there’s zero reviews.

I have some EN-EL15As or 15Bs if anyone is interested. I think the Z8 requires EN-EL15C.

Sorry, but I can't help you with a Grip.
But, I do use and love Watson Batteries.
I've used them & their chargers for a number of years now and love them.

No error messages in your own Z8 (or Z7) ?

Does Watson have two tiers of battery tech, like Wasabi et al ? IOW, selling both a plain EL15 for older cameras and also an updated EL15"Xx" for newer cameras.

Of course, it's also possible that this just might be a camera problem and not a battery problem. The actual error messages still haven't been shared with us.

Some of my third-party 15C batteries work in my Z8 and some give me a message that the battery cannot communicate with the camera.

The Energon and BM batteries work fine, the Promaster and PL batteries give me the message that they can't communicate.

Good to see some detail. My reaction is that for your camera I would only buy batteries from a vendor that allows returns for refund.

Thanks. That's what I did. I also was careful to be sure that the information about the battery specifically stated that it would support the Z8. The ones that don't were obtained earlier before I had the Z8, so compatibility was not an issue. They work fine in my D7100 and D7500 bodies.

Small rig makes a battery that works for the en-el 15c and can also be charged directly from a usb-c cord. They work beautifully in my D850.

One of my photo magazines recommended a 20,000 mAh powerpack which can connect to the Z8 via a USB-C cable.

Undoubtedly a hundred opinions on this tooic. I talked to the Nikon Service Center and a Nikon Rep at our local camera store. Both had the same response.

"The Nikon brand batteries have chips in them that no other aftermarket brand has. The aftermarket manufacturers have not mastered our Nikon technology yet. That is why we recommend our batteries only."

Hence, I have only bought Nikon batteries for my Nikon cameras. Never an issue with them.

By the numbers it seems there should be no important difference btween the OPs camera and your own.

I have learned, sometimes the hard way, to always use the manufacturer's brand for (1) camera batteries and (2) HP ink cartridges.
