Perhaps this is an unintended consequence of the new format?

I would agree with that. I can remember scrolling through a few pages of new topics every day. This site seemed a lot more active nine years ago when I joined. Many of the active users I read back then are no longer here.

Maybe a lot of people joined then also, and their excitement has waned over the 9 years?

[quote=Longshadow]It was!
They accidentally didn't know (watch) what they were doing.

I really don't mean to be disrespectful but as someone pointed out many here are elderly with at least quite a few in their 80's. Very likely it was an accident, something they did not plan or want to do but thought they were clicking on the right topic but ended up with fingers not doing what the mind wanted. For their mistake they have the likes of User ID pointing out their error in unkind words. Who needs that?

We have new users who may not have any idea what the protocol is for different things. They will learn just as you and I did. Are some of us so perfect, I am not meaning you personally in any of this, we cannot forgive and/or overlook some of these things?

As for topics, I really do not like sunsets or sunrises. But I am not demanding a separate section for those topics. I am quite capable of looking at the photo and then clicking out of that thread to the next. Some don't like flowers etc. Do we really need a separate section for every photographable noun on the planet just so someone is not subjected to a photo they may not like? Can't we all just move on to the next.

I believe you are correct that the volume of topics of general interest in this section has declined significantly. I do not believe that the subsections are the reason for this drop, because many of them are not very busy either.

I have noticed several trends, however:

Attempts at serious discussion that are not directed toward promoting mirrorless technology are routinely attacked and denigrated by a fairly small but very predictable group of bullies and detractors.

Attempts at serious discussion that are not directed toward saving raw files and doing extensive post processing are routinely attacked and denigrated by a fairly small but very predictable group of bullies and detractors.

A number of knowledgeable and helpful posters have either ceased posting altogether or have significantly reduced their contributions.

Although the vast majority of members are certainly continuing to pursue their interest in photography with mirror box camera equipment, those in this group (including me) have demonstrated, and continue to demonstrate, that we do not feel that we have a viable platform to discuss those questions, issues, and problems here. I have a list of topics that I would like to initiate, but they will never see the light of day here, simply because I do not have any interest in dealing with the trolls and detractors. I have other venues where I am discussing those topics quite productively and without anywhere near the indigestion and heartburn that would arise here.

In short...I believe that you are observing the slow death of this forum due to the bad behavior of the participants.
I believe you are correct that the volume of topic... (show quote)

Larry, I agree with you. On other forums I participate in, civility is required and miscreants are summarily banned.

Compared to what's out there ...

Click on this link and tell be if this would entice a new user.

A photo forum that doesn't have one picture on the front page. I believe that UHH was great 10 years ago, but has shown nothing new or exciting enough to get some to look inside.

Maybe the AI group can come up with a good cover/first page.

How about two main categories:
1) camera-based photographs, and
2) computer-based photographs.
I’ll bet the first category will have very few postings and the second will have almost all the postings.

I am confused. Don't we need cameras to take photographs and then aren't those photographs post processed on computers and submitted to UHH?

What then are computer based photographs? Are you talking about the newer AI pictures generated on a computer? Aren't those still very minor regarding the number submitted?

Is this what you are talking about or am I missing something?

I joined here a few months before you did.

A member asked a question about a particular lens on a particular camera. I had that combination, so I made a point of taking several pictures when we went to the 4H Fair that evening. I made a mistake - I didn’t check the “keep original” box, so he may not have gotten the information he needed. In any case, another newcomer criticized my choice of subjects; I counted to ten. When I came back, several “old timers” had defended me. From that experience, and several others, I learned that no matter what I was thinking when I show a photo, others will find something to criticize.

Admin treats this as a regular job. If something is posted on Saturday {as was the case with my 4-H photo}, he may not react until Monday afternoon. The result is poor ‘moderation’. I took a several year “vacation” from this place and now feel much better. Others may have permanently left because of the viciousness that can happen.

I agree. As someone told me years ago, maybe in the 1960's, In 100 years none of this will have mattered one bit.

I'll take credit for the "Birds" section, as I lobbied with Admin for that a few years ago since the Main section was overrun by Bird pictures.

Next section I'd like to see removed from Main is "Flowers" or "Plants" or "Horticulture"...anything to remove all those from Main and put them separate. Presently all those overrun the Main.

Admin, are you listening?

So then what photographic subjects should you allow in your ideal list of topics allowed? You don't like birds and now don't like flowers, plants or horticulture. Should we all be able to choose our ideal subject topics and of course Admin would be required to satisfy our needs in that regard. I don't like sunsets or sunrises so should Admin come up with a way to not allow any of those in my computer feed for UHH?

Can't you simply click on the next topic from whoever and if it is a bird or plant, simply click out and move on to the next topic that you do like? I honestly don't mean to be boorish or rude but should each of us have a separate group of topics engineered to our specific tastes in photography? That isn't necessary for me. I just see something I may not like and then move on.

Forgive me IF I am completely missing what you are talking about.
