I just read the posts in my feed, no matter in what category they may reside.

Yes. A few subcategories have been made into separate categories, e.g., birds.

Maybe things are looking up and we are seeing fewer non-photography topics in the "Main Photography" section.

Nah ... never happen at UHH.

Maybe the sub categories are diverting photos away from this section, photos that should not have been posted in this section in the first place.

As Longshadow pointed out above, some people just don't care. And as we all know, if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

I'll take credit for the "Birds" section, as I lobbied with Admin for that a few years ago since the Main section was overrun by Bird pictures.

Next section I'd like to see removed from Main is "Flowers" or "Plants" or "Horticulture"...anything to remove all those from Main and put them separate. Presently all those overrun the Main.

What category of photo subject matter should main gallery be reserved to show?

Does it fluctuate seasonally related to people being involved with other activities, depending on season of the year, not having time available for UHH sometimes?

Perhaps you are correct about fewer topics. One possible reason may be a shrinking membership. Many of our members are elderly or close to it, including me. I am also guessing there is not a huge number of newer younger members here. As older members become infirm or pass on it is possible the active membership is getting smaller resulting in fewer new topics. If I am correct it doesn't bode well for the future of UHH's photography forums.

as well as for the Admin’s income. When I took a ‘vacation’ from this place, and wasn’t sure I would ever return, I asked Admin to be removed from membership. He refused.

Is the OP asking about Main Photography Discussion or Photo Gallery? Several replies here are responding as if it's Photo Gallery (with "Birds" becoming a sub-section a few months ago, and the desire to further split off subjects).

I just counted more than 180 new topics created in Main Photography Discussion since Dec 1. Guess how many are not about cameras, lenses and related (teleconverters, printers, filters), or problems with Lightroom? 🤪 🤪

There isn't much reason to follow Main Discussion section if you shoot with smart phones or are interested in topics such as composition, the effective use of light and color, telling a story. Compare the below:

Wallen's Working the Scene has 43 comments.

User ID's topic on megapixels here has 286 comments.

Capmike's rant against KEH has 108.

Probably the "default" category when they hit Create New Topic, and many neglect to change it to the appropriate category.
I'll bet many don't even realize it can be changed, they don't "read", they just post.
