Do not overload your self one camera one lens. 18-70 is plenty.
Locations:
-Time Square of course and 42nd street
-The High Line (really nice walk and vision of NYC)
-5th avenue from the Guggenheim museum down to SoHo
-walk on the Brooklyn bridge
-the 9/11 memorial
-Battery park and the stair of Liberty (Ellis island is a plus)
-museums
-Madison Avenue from Midtown to 80th street
-the Village
-jazz clubs at night
-(B&H on 9th avenue and 34th street ;o)

Use your cell phone and enjoy your family time rather than screwing around with multiple lenses.

That is why he would use a single zoom lens - which is much more flexible than the camera in a typical cell phone.

How is that? Most cell-phone cameras now have got "zoom" possibilities, some real zooms or different lenses, others false "digital" zoom that is in fact cropping.

The phone cameras I’m aware of have seperate lenses and use software to get some sights. Not the same thing as what a DSLR or MILC can do.

Yes but you were talking of flexibility which exactly why smart phones are so popular and have killed point & shoots (the best camera often happening to be the one you have with you). ;o)

We are talking about someone who has plans to have a DSLR or MILC with him. That is more important than the general trend. Last night I photographed a family infront of the church’s Christmas tree with their iPhone, just after I had taken a photo of it with my own camera. It all depends what you have available.
