Hi folks,
First, Merry Xmas to all of you.
1- My family and I will visit New York city during this Holidays. I was thinking of bringing those lenses.
10-20 mm 4.5-5.6
18-70 mm 3.5-4.5
50 mm 1.8
Will this be covering my needs for street photography, cityscape and family purpose ?
2- Any must see suggestions ? First visit in NY, with my wife and my 15 and 16 years kids.
Regards,
Eric
Believe I would recommend Rockefeller Center (if you can handle crowds). There are a number of hoggers living in NYC. I’m sure you will hear from them. Their recommendations are worth more than mine.

Take the 18-70mm and the 50mm. Leave the 10-20mm at home.

I would imagine they would do fine.

I am guessing that your camera is a crop sensor thus the 10-20mm would be excellent.
I found my 10-18mm was just right with the 24-105mm combo.
Covered everything I needed.

We're going to assume a DX (cropped camera)? I'd go 18-70 from my years past in NYC this time year. Even better would be a longer option, if you had an 18-105, for example. The 50 fits in a jacket pocket, even if it's not too cold this season. Worth having on hand, if needed in doors and you have space to work with that longer crop factor. I've struggled trying to get a family of four around a restaurant table with that lens and someone standing away beside the booth.

I do not think that you will need the 10-20 but not a big deal to pack. I would go to Rockefeller Center, walk the Highline-weather permitting, go to Chinatown and Little Italy-right next to each other (good photos and food). Times Square will be a zoo but I would skip it unless you are going to a show. Of course, Central Park is great to walk through. It is hard to be in NY and not find great photo opportunities. Have fun.
Less is more in the crowds
Rockefeller Center tree- Radio City, St Patricks Cathedral, MOMA are Between 50th and 53rd streets, between 5th and 6th Ave. go to the Top of The Rock, 30 Rockefeller plaza to see great views.
Times Square at night, Central Park in the day time.
Go downtown to the Battery, its the southern tip of Manhattan, and take round trip ride on the Staten Island Ferry.
The views and shots you can get of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty are well worth the time.
I walk around with a 18-400 zoom, like I said , less is more
Have a great time, and stay safe.
I could type and type, but I am a born and bread New Yorker.
Enjoy

Ask yourself the question. We don't know what kind of images you like best, what your style of photography is or what your needs are... Photography is about what you like, not what somebody else likes. Unless you're trying to make money with photography, which might be possible with images you like....
No offend, but I don't understand why people ask others what gear they should bring.

Exactly!
They will suggest based on what
THEY shoot.
People need to learn the capabilities and limitations of their equipment.
Then they will have no problem figuring out what to take someplace.
The 18-70 and the 50 will be fine. Besides Rockefeller Center, of course, you will want to see Bryant Park at 42nd between 5th and Avenue of the Americas. Times Square, St. Patricks Cathedral, Grand Central Terminal are great places to visit. Next to Grand Central there is a new attraction where you are up high and glass enclosed, and the view is supposed to be excellent. I have not bee there yet. The store windows on Fifth Avenue are always well done. Walk along the avenues on the east side in the evening to see the lights. Make sure to always be aware of your surroundings as NYC is less safe than it was.
I just came back from a 4 day trip in NYC. I shoot with an OM-1 (micro 4/3) and just used my 12-100 lens (24-200 FF). Had a wide angle lens (8-25 16-50 FF) but never used it. I saw the following:
Ferry ride to Statue of Liberty, just the tour around the base and museum, didn't have tickets to the pedestal or crown.
Walked across the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset. Next time, I'll shoot a time-lapse from there.
Mid-day visit to the Empire State Building (86th floor), fantastic view. If my schedule had allowed it I would have gone up at sunset for a few hours. Will do it next time I'm back there.
Times Square, day and night.
Grand Central Station.
Rockefeller Square and the skating rink.
American Museum of Natural History, for me a minimum of 2 days to see
Art museums; the Met, MOMA, Guggenheim, Whitney, etc.
East River at sunrise and sunset
Architectural photography with the reflections in the glass buildings.
18-70 for sure and a 50 in the pocket

Go to the Metropolitan Museum. Find the medieval section just behind the Grand Staircase and see the most beautifully decorated tree in the universe. Then pick any other section of the museum and enjoy a couple of hours of pure bliss.
I don't think the roof is open now, but if it is, enjoy a zillion dollar view.
Hey Eric:
As was mentioned in one of the replies already, you have not indicated what it is you like to shoot, what your eye will sort of look for. Probably, it would be a good idea for you to do some research that would support your personal interests. Plus, you've already gotten some very good suggestions. I guarantee that you will need many more visits to shoot even those suggestions thoroughly.
I go out shooting most days here in the city, even in somewhat inclement weather. I bring one of two cameras, one with a fixed 28 mm and the other with a 24-105; never both. So my suggestion is to take only your 18–70. It will cover most of your needs, and your cell phone will handle the extremes, & reasonably well, if needed.
Things can happen very quickly here in the city, so more important than which lens is what settings are you walking around with. Routinely, my shutter is set at 1/250, my aperture, depending on the sky conditions between f5.6 and f11, and my ISO on auto. My zoom is at 35mm or so, focus on auto also. Therefore, almost always there is somewhere in the frame of that first shot something that I can work with. Usually, but not always(!), there's time then to work the scene
Happy holidays, and enjoy my city.
