I believe you are correct that the volume of topics of general interest in this section has declined significantly. I do not believe that the subsections are the reason for this drop, because many of them are not very busy either.

I have noticed several trends, however:

Attempts at serious discussion that are not directed toward promoting mirrorless technology are routinely attacked and denigrated by a fairly small but very predictable group of bullies and detractors.

Attempts at serious discussion that are not directed toward saving raw files and doing extensive post processing are routinely attacked and denigrated by a fairly small but very predictable group of bullies and detractors.

A number of knowledgeable and helpful posters have either ceased posting altogether or have significantly reduced their contributions.

Although the vast majority of members are certainly continuing to pursue their interest in photography with mirror box camera equipment, those in this group (including me) have demonstrated, and continue to demonstrate, that we do not feel that we have a viable platform to discuss those questions, issues, and problems here. I have a list of topics that I would like to initiate, but they will never see the light of day here, simply because I do not have any interest in dealing with the trolls and detractors. I have other venues where I am discussing those topics quite productively and without anywhere near the indigestion and heartburn that would arise here.

In short...I believe that you are observing the slow death of this forum due to the bad behavior of the participants.
I believe you are correct that the volume of topic... (show quote)

I agree!

How about two main categories:
1) camera-based photographs, and
2) computer-based photographs.
I’ll bet the first category will have very few postings and the second will have almost all the postings.

I think the influence of computers is seriously overstated as of now.

Wrong - it’s understated! Not saying it’s a bad thing; but “photography” is becoming “computography.”

I guess that depends on who you are. You may use a computer - I use my cameras.

I'll guess more "upcoming" photographers will utilize computer manipulation more because the technology is available and many are technology oriented.
We older folks simply appreciate "the camera" more.

Technology and times advance.
(Wet darkroom -> digital darkroom for example.)

I'll take credit for the "Birds" section, as I lobbied with Admin for that a few years ago since the Main section was overrun by Bird pictures.

Next section I'd like to see removed from Main is "Flowers" or "Plants" or "Horticulture"...anything to remove all those from Main and put them separate. Presently all those overrun the Main.

Admin, are you listening?

I use the computer for only minimal purposes: straighten the image, minor crops, lighten/darken.

In general, this material doesn’t belong in “Main” - they are “Gallery” material.

How about a “Mundane Snapshot” category? That would really clean things up.

“Snapshot” is in the mind of the beholder.

I think we all might spend some time with some new photographers. I find that a good portion of them, even young ones, are quite traditional in their approach. The yare tired of all the overmanipulation.
